Friday July 1, 1898

Clear & pleasant -- The grand American assault upon Santiago de Cuba commenced this morning by land and sea -- Sampson bombarding the forts at the entrance and Shafter advancing upon the city -- Very lively battle -- "Hot time in the old town tonight" -- Received "Black Cat" magazine for July yesterday -- I am left out entirely in the prize story competition -- Evening down town -- Met Tommy Rowe, engineer, Gold Hill of old -- we affiliated or re-affiliated & had good social old time converse -- Has been working at Overton, engineering, last 4 months, has got out & is going home to his wife & babies in Gold Hill tomorrow -- Bed 12 --

Saturday July 2

Same -- Battle of Santiago progressing furiously, with great slaughter on both sides, but we are getting best of it, taking outside works, etc -- and driving Spaniards into the city -- Sampson busy demolishing the big entrance forts -- getting ready to go into the harbor -- Extensive decorations going on all about town for the 4th -- About 9 o'clock this evening -- Mr John Green, a wagon maker threw a lighted Chinese bomb into street -- didn't go, so when he went to pick it up it went -- Doctors amputated hand at

Sunday July 3

Same -- Telegram at 9 PM said Cevera's fleet of seven war vessels made a bold dash to get out of Santiago harbor this morning but was met by Sampson's fleet and every ship was sunk except one, and they were in hot chase after her -- Surrender of Santiago was momentarily expected -- Reno decorations great, & much firing of crackerrs, bombs, etc -- Governor Sadler et al from Carson came down this evening -- Bed 11 --

Monday July 4

Clear, fine, warm day -- Reno full of people -- few from Carson & Comstock Parade excellent, what there was of it -- Governor & staff -- Brass band, Reno Guard, GAR Vets -- about a dozen floats, Goddess of Liberty, States, Red Cross, the Masonic, trades, etc -- Uncle Sam & Johnny Bull on a tandem bicycle -- carriages -- Passed through principal streets -- exercises at the convent Park, corner 4th & Lake sts -- Presided, Hon Wm Webster; Orator, Hon Judge A E Cheney; Reader, W C Lamb; Poet, Miss "Goodwin S Doten" -- She recited poem written by her mother -- band, quartette, etc -- Fireworks in evening, west part of town -- Pretty good -- I was around & saw everything -- Reno profusely decorated and terrible fusillade of bmbs crackers etc all

Great War News -- The Ladrones Captured 1898 -- Shafter Takes a Rest

day -- Green, who lost his hand last evening says he feels all right today -- Very light celebrations at Virginia & at Carson -- The war news made all feel good -- Cevera's fleet was totally destroyed not one vessel escaping -- all were crowded ashore and destroyed by burning or bombarding -- terrible slaughter -- 1,300 prisoners taken including Cevera himself -- Shafter notified Santiago this morning to surrender in 24 hours or he will bombard -- The cruiser Charleston, with troops transports have arrived at Manilla -- Admiral Camara with another Spanish fleet, from Cadiz is passing through the Suez canal for the Philippines it is supposed -- Only one man was killed and 2 wounded in yesterday's naval episode -- Bed 12 --

Tuesday July 5

Same -- Shafter concluded to take a rest, now that the Spanish fleet is destroyed and Santiago at his mercy -- Notifies Govt that he will hold the enemy safe until plenty of reinforcements reach him and meanwhile give his hard worked and sposed troops time to recuperate -- On the way to Manila, the Charleston stopped and captured the Ladrono Islands, belonging to Spain -- Raised Am flag --

Wednesday July 6

Same -- Telegrams from Halifax, N.S. tells that on July 4 the French transcontinental line passenger steamer L Bourgogne, ran into the British ship Cromartyshire, in a thick fog, 60 miles south of Sable Island. The B was going at high rate of speed -- 18 knots -- the other only 4 or 5 knots -- The B was so badly injured forward by the collision that she sunk in less than 15 minutes -- over 600 of her 833 passengers & crew were lost -- She left New York last Saturday for Havre -- Passengers lost were mostly Americans -- Only one woman saved out of over 200 -- The US Senate today passed the Hawaiian annexation resolution, so it only needs President's signature to make Hawaii colony of the United States -- Company C, Reno Guard, Capt Stoddard, went to Carson on the PM local train, that being selected as the mustering rendezvous of the new battalion of Nevada infantry -- They will be mustered in as soon as expedient into the US Govt service -- Lieut Hobson & his gallant crew were exchanged yesterday at Santiago, and returned to their ship amid great rejoicing -- Wife, with other lady school teachers left this morning train for an outing at Oakland S.F. etc -- Sam went fishing up the river yesterday with two other

young chaps -- went afoot & took blankets along -- PM a few thunder clouds with some thunder and rain to the east & south but none here -- Lates official estimates give 1,200 Spaniards killed and 1,500 captured in the recent destruction of Cevera's fleet -- Americans only lost one killed and two wounded -- ships damage trifling --

Thursday July 7

Cloudy -- sultry -- PM & evening thunder clouds, same as yesterday -- The Cromartyshire was on her way over from Glasgow, with a crew of 21 men -- had to be towed into Halifax -- bow badly stove in -- her compartments saved her from sinking -- Congress adjourned at 2 PM today -- Alfred rode on his wheel up to Laughton's Springs, half a dozen miles above here on the river this morning -- found Sam & his party having a good time -- Brought home a lot of rainbow trout & we had them for dinner -- fine -- Cevera has been sent with other prisoners of war to Portsmouth, New Hampshire and is treated with distinguished consideration -- Is paroled and allowed to do and go as he pleases and make himself at home -- He's all right -- Sam returned from his fishing trip about 10 o'clock this evening --

Clear & warm -- A troublesome lower jaw molar troubled me today more than usual today, and gave me a bad night of it -- No sleep or rest whatever -- Frank Emmitt, new US Marshal for Nevada is on duty, superseding
