Tuesday Oct 4

Clear, cool & pleasant -- The Wallace grand combination of circus, menagerie, etc the best & most extensive of all traveling exhibits arrived early this morning from the East -- 2 long trains -- afternoon & evening shows -- admission $1 -- everybody went -- & got moneys worth -- best show of the kind ever here, they all said -- Only Goodie went, from our family, in the PM -- much pleased -- The street parade at noon finest -- best I ever saw -- People from a radius of 50 miles, Indians, etc, came to circus -- town was full -- C C Powning died early this morning, about time the circus was arriving -- showed on his big reserved lot on Powning's Addition, west of town, by riverside, & the rings were in center, on very spot where he planned to build his residence to be best in country and he lying dead within sound of the clown's jokes and general hilarity -- It is estimated

that over 3,000 were audience at each performance -- Best equipped show of the kind I ever saw -- finest & best work animals, most all nice dapple grays, imputed -- The train hands worked hard all night, railroading, and moving on to Truckee, for tomorrow PM & evening performances at that place -- then on to Sacramento, San Jose, San F, etc -- PM I wrote No 4 for the Wells Herald and sent it on 8:30 evening train -- Snow fell to the depth

Same -- Warmer -- Rec'd copy of Gardnerville Record of yesterday, containing my letter, No 2, dated Sept 30 -- full column -- all right -- Senator Jones with Harry Gorham & wife came down on evening train, from Gold Hill this evening -- I met them & Jones told me "I'll see you tomorrow -- came down to attend Powning's funeral --

Thursday Oct 6

Same -- PM, big funeral of Powning from Masonic Hall -- I counted it in passing -- nearly 400 on foot including the various Orders to which he belonged and 100 University cadets -- band, pall bearers, etc -- About 80 carriages -- Masonic cemetery -- Jones and Newlands in carriages -- Quite a number from Va & Carson -- Evening wrote 4 page letter to Gardnerville Record -- No 3 -- took most of night -- Bed at 5 -- Tom Zeimetz murdered by Antonio Patagna at Dayton yesterday --

Variable -- cloudy -- Slept 1 1/2 hours this morning til 6:30 -- Breakfast --

Mailed my Record letter on morning V & T train -- JP Jones went to Gold Hill -- I was at home most of day -- Evening a fair shower or two of rain -- Bed 10 -- mostly clear -- Trains east & west badly delayed today & tonight -- met John Minadew of Gold Hill this evening down on law business -- old time miner & friend -- Rosa's father --

Saturday Oct 8

Same -- About noon a light shower or two -- Trains all right again -- Wells Herald came with my letters 3 and 4 both in it in full -- No 3 missed, but got there just the same after all -- The bullion and coin in the Carson Mint's being shipped to San Francisco -- cut toe nails & bed 12 -- clear --

Sunday Oct 9

Variable -- cloudy -- Have quite a touch of hay fever -- sneezing, nose running, sore eyes etc -- same yesterday -- Bed 10:30 -- clear & frosty --

Monday Oct 10

Same -- JP Jones came down from Gold Hill on evening train and went on to SF tonight -- I met him -- said he would be back in a day or two --

Tuesday Oct 11

Same -- PM wrote 4 page letter to Wells Herald -- & mailed on evening train at 9 -- Also sent private note concerning my recompense -- Bed 11:30 --

Oregon & Iowa off for Manila -- G Record No 4

Wednesday Oct 12

Clear & pleasant -- Bed 10:30 -- The battleships Oregon and Iowa sailed from New York today under sealed orders, but supposed to be for Manila --

Thursday Oct 13

Same -- PM and night I wrote 6 page letter to Gardnerville Record -- took all night -- didn't go to bed or sleep at all -- No 4 --

Friday Oct 14

Variable -- cloudy -- AM down town -- Home at 11 -- went to bed and slept soundly 5 hours, or till 4 PM -- Evening down town -- Sent my Record letter by this morning V & T Train

Saturday Oct 15

Clear & pleasant -- The boys harvested the crop on one big old pear tree this PM -- as the fruit is dropping off rapidly -- Got fully two barrels of the pears -- All hard & will not ripen till about December -- Old Dr Collins went back to Oakland yesterday -- His wife came over and took him home -- He is over 73 and too feeble for anything -- No good here -- Hon AC Cleveland, independent candidate for US Senator in opposition to Stewart, spoke at Opera House this evening -- Two big bonfires in front, and band of music -- Fair audience, not crowded -- music -- spoke

Sunday Oct 16

Same -- colder -- Ed Seitz was fatally run over by a freight train at the Virginia street crossing about 12 oclock last night -- long train was standing on track, & he on his way home tried to pass it by climbing over between two cars -- train started & he fell -- one leg cut off above knee & other below -- Died about 4 AM -- About 60 yrs old & leaves wife & 2 children here -- life insured in workmen for $2,000 -- good sort of a man & good friend of mine -- used to be sheriff of Elko county -- I got letter from George R Vardy of the Wells Herald -- will send me some money next week -- Bed 11 -- clear & sharp cold --
