55 -- The Filipino War Still Progressing Comstock Pumping Again -- New Insane Asylum Superindendent Sutro's Estate Less Than $3,000,000

Saturday April 1, 1899

Cloudy, cool, variable -- The Filipinos are being fatally & [blank] dealt with and should soon quit -- Their seat of Government, Malalos, captured yesterday -- Have removed it to San Fernando -- a few miles. -- Bed 12 -- Old Charley Tobener, one of the oldest saloon keepers in Gold Hill -- near the railroad crossing died there yesterday -- aged 66 -- native of Germany --

Sunday April 2

Clear & pleasant -- Easter Sunday I walked around & took an outside look at all the churches with singing & services going on, just before noon, winding up at the brewery, then to the post office, then to dinner -- felt better for it -- The Knights Templar from Va & Carson went to Reno to Easter services with the Knights there -- went on 3 coach special at 9 AM returning at 7 PM -- were banqueted -- had good time -- Sent a 2 page letter to wife by this evening train -- Bed 12 --

Monday April 3

Variable -- cloudy with a light shower or so of rain toward evening -- just enough to lay the dust a little -- Letter from Wm M Lang of Empire via Reno, asking about his getting some chance for employment in Reno --

Replied to it -- Also got statement of acct for February from SF Chronicle with 80 cents in stamps, payment in full for Feb -- I signed & sent the receipt in full -- A lower right eye tooth been giving me much trouble lately & much worse this AM, so I went to Dr Cavell, dentist -- tooth worn down so there that nerve was exposed -- He pulled the nerve out -- like a small white thread, 1/4 inch long -- cured the pain at once -- Went to him at 5 PM and he treated it further for a few minutes and I am to be continued next Thursday at 5 PM -- Bed 11

Tuesday April 4

Clear & pleasant & warm -- PM I visited State Library & Printing office -- At Peterson's Photo car I got one of the pictures taken of us in the State Printing office on the 28th ultimo -- Pretty good -- 50 cts -- Bed 11 --

Wednesday April 5

Same -- Morning my nerveless left lower jaw eye tooth woke me early from aching soreness -- Went to my dentist and he reopened and treated the offender temporarily -- The Silver Peak cases which have occupied exclusive attention of the US Dist court for last 2 wks came to end today -- Jurymen venire of 75, witnesses, and lawyers (Campbell and Metson from S.F.) from here & elsewhere all discharged for the term, and those who did not

flags at 1/2 mast on the gov't buildings throughout the nation as well as here in honor of the country's dead from Cuba, etc, being buried in the national cemetery at Arlington Heights near Washington today -- Aguinaldo is stated to be deposed from command of the Filipino insurgents, and General Luna, a noted rebel chief takes his place -- Yesterday the newly organized Indian Brass Band from the Indian School, south of Carson, 3 miles, came to town on a visit -- Serenaded the printing offices, the RR depot and the town generally -- very good -- All young men and boys -- 22 of them, including two of the oldest, who returned recently from Carlisle Pa -- sent back probably to help get up this band -- 10 still at Carlisle in the big band there from all Indian nations in U.S. -- The street sprinkler got started today for 1st time of the season -- was need --

Same -- Wrote & sent duplicate 5 page letters to SF Chronicle and SL Tribune giving summary or synopsis of the recent Silver Peak suits -- Bed 11

Saturday April 8

Same -- Warmer -- Spring -- Storey county hospital totally destroyed, by fire at 1 o'clock this morning -- originating from kitchen -- 37 patients -- all escaped but Jos Richardson, an old timer -- 65 yrs old -- who got burned up trying to rescue some of his belongings -- The Carson News San F correspondent today says. -- Rose at 6 AM and sent a 5 page letter to Reno Journal on Silver Peak, same as to Chronicle and Tribune yesterday -- by 10 AM local for tomorrow morning paper -- Rec'd very short pointed letter from Bro Sam -- Somewhat jammed himself, so can't lend a cent. In the SF Examiner of yesterday, Wells Drury gives a very neat & pleasant little old time Va Comstock sketch, entitled "The Prima Donna's Bow to the Comstock Boys" -- 1/2 columns -- I am mentioned in it -- created much amused comment -- Bed 11 -- clear & warm --

Sunday April 9

Blustering & dusty, with clouds over the Sierra-Orlando E Jones "Dan" Jones, or "Dan Conover the clown" is stated to be in last stages of broken down decay in San F & his faithful wife works in a book bindery to support them -- Our University basket ball team of 13 young ladies got beaten 7 to 13 yesterday at Berkeley Cal in a game with the Berkeley BB team -- I wrote & sent letter to wife this PM -- Tim Dempsey left for Lovelock this evening expecting to go into the saloon or hotel business there -- Bed at 11 -- still blustering & threatening --

Variable but very pleasant --

Tuesday April 11

Clear & pleasant -- room -- My heart troubled me some last night, toward morning -- so I felt tired and mean today and ate nothing at all -- Went to my room, Bed at 11:30 AM & slept soundly till 2 PM -- did me good -- 4 PM went to dentist Cavell & he partially filled my sore tooth -- come again day after tomorrow & he wil complete the job. Yesterday our University Basket Ball team beat the Stanford team at Palo Alto 3 to 2 -- good! My great Silver Peak article did not appear in either the Chronicle
