lottery -- drew $2.50, in the Little Louisiana, many years ago at Virginia -- This $1.25 has cost me at least $40 in my small monthly investments -- I find the annexed item in the Virginia Enterprise of this morning -- Bed 11 -- Graduation, closing or "commencement" exercises at State University are progressing this week -- vacation for a month or two follows. Heavy rains have prevailed over in California this week -- Sure thing on good crops of all kinds --

Variable, cool -- AM heavy showers of rain and hail -- The changes in the Insane Asylum administration at Reno resultant upon the late general election went into effect today -- Dr Bergstein being ousted & Dr Patterson put in his place -- other employees ditto --

Friday June 2

Variable & cool -- The county Grand Jury today had J F Lind's incendearism charge before them today, and finding no positive evidence against him but a strong alibi in his favor, ignored the case & discharged him & his bondsmen -- His wife & daughter testified that he was at home & abed at time of the fire & couldn't possibly have set it -- Mrs Dolan, a neighbor corroborated their testimony -- She testified that she saw and spoke with

Lind as he went from his residence to the fire -- at alarm. I received a letter from C D Van Duzer, Winnemucca saying he is going to start publishing The Nevada Magazine, early in July and asking me to write a 2,000 word article for its first issue on the Early Journalism of Nevada -- At the train this morning quite a number of young lady & gent University students came for Carson & beyond for vacation -- some graduates included -- Bed 11 --

Saturday June 3

Clear warm & pleasant -- Evening I sent off letters to Chronicle and Tribune with statement of acct, also to C D Van Duzer accepting his proposition to write for his new Nevada Magazine --

Sunday June 4

Same -- Fixed up a "pome", "Uncle Zeb Sees a Hoss Race," that Harry Day, the Carson Postmaster (Sylvester H Day) gave me -- six verses in all -- four lines each -- wrote letter to accompany it and will send it to J W E Townsend, Miner-Index, Bodie Cal tomorrow -- The "pome" was given to Harry by Ex Gov Burke of North Dakota when he was here a few weeks ago as Government Land Office Inspector -- About 30 wheelmen went to Reno on special train today, to the 50 mile relay race, bicycle, at the race track -- Quite a lot also

went from the Comstock -- The last of the University Students came home on morning train -- for vacation -- Andy Roberts & wife & little 12 yrs old daughter Pearl went catfishing over to Washoe lake today -- He caught 200, wife 150 & Pearlie 7 -- Big catch -- Bed 1 -- Spent my last dime today -- broke & running behind --

Monday June 5

Clear, warmer & pleasant -- Morning I sent my letter etc to Jim Townsend, Bodie -- Roberts gave me a dozen catfish for my dinner, got them cooked at my hotel & enjoyed them -- The contested election for Governor of Nevada -- McMillan vs Sadler -- came up at 10 AM in Supreme Court -- I attended -- Returns from 8 counties, from last election to be canvassed -- Nye County occupied today -- 263 ballots -- 63 objected to & filed for decision by the court -- Sent brief report, 1 page to Journal, Reno, by evening train -- At 11:20 o'clock just as I was getting into bed, fire bells and whistles sounded a loud and persistent alarm of fire apparently at the south part of town -- I could see no light or other indications and finally concluded I was not needed so went to bed and sleep --

Same -- The fire last night was a small wood shed or outhouse at rear

of the Episcopal church west part of town -- church badly scorched, but saved -- incendiary fire -- attempts were also made to burn the big schoolhouse near by, also the Catholic church -- Fire bugs evidently getting in their work again -- Mr Pierini of Virginia City committed suicide this afternoon at residence of Mrs Rafetto in Carson -- shooting his head with pistol in mouth -- The Governor contest went on as usual --

I attended all day -- count of Nye and Lyon counties completed, and that of Lander nearly so -- Sent 23 page letter to wife evening train --

Wednesday June 7

Same -- A light white frost was observed in some parts of town early this morning -- the last of the season probably -- Charles L Fair and wife (youngest son of my old bonanza chief J G or "old Jim Fair" of the Comstock) arrived from Lake Tahoe this PM with his wife, and both went home to San F by evening train -- Got letter from wife, also one from William Nelson, Managing Editor SL Tribune -- Says I can expect money shortly from the business department of the paper -- I attended the Governor's inquest today -- Bed 11

Thursday June 8

Same -- attended Supreme Court as usual -- Miss Miriam Michelson arrived in town this morning from Reno to write up the Governor contest for SF Examiner --

I met & had pleasant chat with her -- quite a reputation as a good writer -- she was in court all day -- My letter I wrote to Tribune on the 27th of last month appears in that paper of the 6th inst -- About 140 lines --

Friday June 9

Clear and hottest of the recent hot weather -- 84° -- Fatally hot weather resulting in many deaths & prostratings reported in the Eastern & middle western States -- At Gov's contest as usual -- Evening Livingston's saloon received special telegraphic report of the big fight between Jim Jeffries and Bob Fitzsimmons at Coney Island, New York this evening for $20,000 and the championship of the world -- Fitz licked Jim Corbett here a year ago last March 17 but this time he got knocked out in the 11th round -- point of the chin -- Had to be packed out of the ring -- Bed at 11 --

Saturday June 10

Same -- 87° -- letter from the SL Tribune inclosing $4.90 in payment for my Silver Peak article, send May 3d, 27 1/2 inches and Nevada copper boom May 27, 14 1/2 inches -- 42 inches -- Attended Governor contest as usual -- Met Henry Mayenbaum, from SF, on business -- he went back tonight --
