My duplicate letter to SL Tribune and SF Chronicle of 24th appeared in Tribune of 27th but none in Chronicle --

Friday June 30

Same -- PM I commenced writing "The Early Journalism of Nevada" for C D Van Duzer's proposed new Nevada Magazine -- Wrote 1 page -- Johnny Carroll, a colored friend of mine from Washoe lake dined with me at my hotel --

Nevada Newspapers -- Decorations for the Fourth -- 1899 Van Duzer -- Bedbugs Galore -Roger Prendergast Dead --

Saturday July 1, 1899

Clear, fine hot day -- 87º -- PM was at State Printing office & got a supply of paper cut for my note book -- Also list of all the newspapers in the State. 31 of them, against about 100 twenty years ago -- Fourth of July decorations are going up lively all about town -- Plenty of money been raised -- Will have glorious Fourth

Sunday July 2

Same-- 90º -- PM wrote on my Early Nevada Journalism article -- sent brief note of inquiry about it to CD Van Duzen, Winnemucca -- Bed 11 -- I kill lots of bedbugs in my room & about bed during this hot weather -- This old lodging hotel seems well supplied --

Hot and Breezy -- Everybody decorating & fixing up for the Fourth -- All

the PM was devoted by me to my write up of the early Journalism of Nevada -- Big job with little in it -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 -- Roger Prendergast one of the best and longest known mining foremen and superintendents on the Comstock lode died at the Russ House, San F, this PM of consumption, incidental to his mining career -- native of Tipperary Ireland, aged 63 --

Carson's Celebration, 4th of July --

Tuesday July 4

Same -- Fine day and very pleasant little celebration of our patriotic American holiday -- Decorations on all public and business buildings very excellent & elaborate -- Procession started at 11 AM, confined to the main street -- Marshal & aids, sheriff, ditto -- Governor Sadler & staff, Carson Brass Band, 20 pieces, Warren Engine Co with hose carriage & goddess of liberty, car of State full of small girls -- 30 wood choppers with axes, woodchoppers float, 4 horses with 2 men chopping at a big log & throwing out chips for souvenirs -- amid a grove of green pines, officers of the day in 2 carriages -- Indian band -- 20 pieces -- 70 boy pupils from the Indian school -- About 250 in all procession -- limited but very neat turnout -- usual exercises, oration, reading, etc at east side of State Capitol, in the Park -- PM a few tolerable foot races on street, in vicinity of Post office -- Horribles didnt turn out as was advertised --

dead failure -- Evening fine bicycle parade -- Carson band, 16 pieces, on bicycles framed together & pushed along, 4 abreast -- original & good -- Warren Engine Co with Goddess about 20 lady bikers -- plenty of lantern

The Glorious Fourth at Carson -- Van Duzer --1899 SF Chronicle -- Jim Townsend -- Disastrous Fireworks Celebration at Reno --

& other decorations -- Big govt post office building finely trimmed & illuminated -- chinese lanterns lighted in all decorations, flags everywhere also eternal fusillade of crackers, bombs, fireworks, rockets, red fire, etc -- big hay wagon loaded with men & boys with big supploy of active fireworks, which took fire returning down town -- vacating the wagon very lively -- No damage -- no runaway -- Evening show best of all -- Bed 12 -- All quiet & taking a rest -- Empire joined in the celebration today, but not over a dozen from Va & none from Reno -- Celebration at both places -- Rec'd responsive note from Van Duzer

Wednesday July 5

Same -- breezy & cooler -- Everybody cooling off from the 4th, taking down decorations etc -- PM wrote some on my journalistic job -- letter from SF Chronicle asking about an item in my statement rendered -- Sent response to it -- Also rec'd responsive letter from Jim Townsend -- Reno took the cake on fireworks yesterday -- one at 1:30 AM in the chinatown section destroyed 25 buildings and another at 10 AM destroyed about a dozen more

Fires at Reno -- Comstock Celebration -The Shortridges Leave -- The Governor Contest -SL Tribune -- Jim Townsend -- Watch Compass

presumed to be caused by falling rockets or other fireworks -- Cobb's building also burned -- The celebration and parade otherwise didn't amount to much -- The great bicycle relay race there was won by the Sacramento contestants by half a mile -- The celebration at Va was very good & satisfactory -- C M Shortridge & bride left on evening train for their home in San Jose, Cal -- Bed 12 --

Thursday July 6

Same -- Governor contest on again -- recanvass of ballots of Empire precinct, and of White Pine county, took all day, but went to a finish -- resulting in little or no advantage to either side -- McMillan side rests -- court adjourned at 4 PM till Saturday at 10, when testimony on rebuttal will come in, after which arguments of counsel, and decision of court -- Sent 1 page letter to SL Tribune on subject tonight -- Bed 11 -- Wrote & sent another 1 page letter to Jim Townsend this morning --

Same -- Morning sent page letter to Jim Townsend -- PM at room on my writing job -- Bed 11 --

Saturday July 8

Same -- Gov's contest -- Respondant had Sheriff, County Clerk, Justice of the Peace and Constable of Washoe county as evidence relative to voting boundaries of Reno township south line -- showing that ranchers outside voted in Reno for township officers, etc -- At 4 PM adj till Tuesday next at 10 AM. Recd letter from wife, and sent 2 page to her this evening -- open air band concert in the Capitol Park this evening -- Big crowd with plenty of children enjoyed occasion as usual -- Bed 11. Sent short letter to Drury this evening.

Same -- Wrote on my Journalistic job most of the day -- Evening about town some -- Bed 11

Monday July 10

Same -- same job -- Rec'd check from SL Trib of $2.30 in pay't for letters published June 13 & 27, each 10 inches = 20 inches -- about 11 cts per inch --

Tuesday July 11

Clear & pleasant -- Wrote some on my Early Journalism job -- Was at State library awhile looking at file of Enterprise -- letter from wife with $2 -- Rec'd Bodie Miner Index of last Saturday, Jim Townsend's paper, and in it
