but I get a much better room at the same price, and better than all I get away from the countless herd of bed bugs that have been tormenting me -- I killed about 40 this morning at 4 o'clock when I had to get up for the purpose -- but I have been doing that same thing for over a week past -- So I did but little on my journalistic job, and went to bed at 11, all right, but tired and willing to sleep -- Professor J G Lemmon and wife left on last evening's train for their home in Oakland, Cal. Cold Night --

Same -- PM I worked at revising my job -- 7 PM received from SF Chronicle "Townsend wealthy candy man this city, recently divorced and Mrs King said gone Nevada to be married -- If ceremony took place your town send three hundred words -- Please warn if you get nothing -- M H de Young" -- I started on track at once & at 8 replied by telegraph "Parties not arrived -- no marriage license issued -- Will look out" -- Alf Doten --

Variable -- PM heavily clouded with some thunder, but no rain -- I busy revising -- letter from wife -- Bessie gone back to Cal, etc -- Evening heavier thunder, sharp lightning and a copious shower or 2 of rain -- Bed 12 -- raining lightly -- The Carson Evening News had my last Friday letter on

Jumbo district copied from the Salt Lake Tribune -- nearly a column. Some heavy showers during the night --

Friday Aug 4

Same -- Very heavy thunder shower about 11 AM -- made mountains white with strong deposit of hail -- Very heavy at Va -- lightning damaged the electric lights dynamos etc, $200 worth -- PM occasional light showers -- My old friend H H Bence, the surveyor, etc came up from Reno yesterday and left this evening for his old home in Des Moines, Iowa, where his sister died recently leaving him about $6,000 -- I saw him off -- At the office of the News this noon I found a copy of the new Nevada Magazine & they gave it to me -- Ordinary looking, yellow cover pamphlet -- not stylish -- 79 pages good reading matter including history of Reno by F H Norcross -- 12 articles in all -- by as many authors -- I worked at revising

Saturday Aug 5

Cloudy and pleasant -- no rain -- My rich San Francisco candy man Townsend the S.F. Chronicle was wiring me about on Wednesday, fooled us all by going to Lake Tahoe via Truckee with his Mrs King and to Tallac & down to Genoa, where they got married Tuesday and went back by way of the lake to S.F. -- Worked revising -- Bed 11 -- got a copy of the new Nevada Magazine

Cloudy & variable -- PM plenty of thunder and a big shower or two -- letter from C D Van Duzer, Winnemucca about my article -- replied I would send some tomorrow evening -- Worked revising -- Bed 11 -- cloudy -- cool --

Monday Aug 7

Clear, breezy & pleasant -- concluded the revision of one third of my job -- 12 pages & tried to mail it to Winnemucca by evening train, but it was detained at Mound House, waiting for the C & C train which was delayed by a landslide near Ft Churchill & did not leave here till 8 o'clock, too late to connect at Reno for Wadsworth so I held it for further revision & send tomorrow -- The Morgan mill on Carson river at Empire got up steam, blew whistle and started up machinery, last Saturday preparing to work ore from Con Va mine -- Been idle for last two or three years or more --

Van Duzer, Received letter from J F Haley, Reno, business manager Nevada Magazine calling for copy & also relative to history of Carson article -- Ed Walsh is to write for the magazine -- Replied by evening train -- then went down & saw Walsh at his store in Ormsby House block -- Bed 12 -- Under orders from Washington the shipment of the treasure from the Carson Mint to San Francisco commenced today -- $800,000 by this evening train -- All coined silver dollars, in swell strong canvass sacks -- $1,000 in each sack, each weighing 60 pounds -- total today 22 1/2 tons -- five or six milions still in mint --

Same -- Met Ed Walsh in street this AM and agreed to take the job off his hands of writing "Carson the Capitol City of Nevada" for the Nevada Magazine -- PM was at State House getting material for it from Secy of State -- etc -- Bed 11 -- Met A C Pratt on street today and got him to give me the copy of the Thompson & West's History of Nevada belonging to him that I borrowed from the News office about six weeks ago and have been using since -- Pratt formerly Surveyor General of Nevada -- Deputy Secy of State -- etc

Same -- AM busy picking up Carson information -- PM wrote out Fred Hart and sent it to Van Duzer to add to Part 1 -- 530 words, making 4,315 words, exactly same as Norcross had in his Reno write up in 1st number of magazine -- singular but happened that way -- Rec'd short letter from this noon saying had received Part 1 & forward to Reno to Haley -- Big picnic for Va, G H Episcopal Sunday School children, Treadway's Park -- 4 big coaches, crowded -- Comstock Band along -- 8 pieces -- Between 3 & 4 hundred in all -- Only one this year -- none last -- Bed 11:30 -- A Third shipment of $800,000 this evening from the Mint to the Sub treasury San Francisco

Same -- 7:30 -- Rec'd $1.90 from SL Tribune for letter July 6 on Nevada Governorship and July 28 "Queer Mineral Find" -- total 16 1/2 inches -- about a bit an inch -- Gathered more Carson information from various sources today -- PM wrote letters to J F Haley, Reno, and C D Van Duzer, Winnemucca relative to my writing jobs, etc -- Also receipted to the Tribune for the $1.90 -- The fourth shipment of $800,000 coined silver dollars from the Carson mint to the US Sub Treasury, San Francisco
