Co Cal or to Stockton. Those who didn't go by morning train went this evening leaving Carson quiet as before. PM wrote on an article on the Australian Ballot -- wrote & sent 2 page letter to Van Duzen -- I call for more money -- A press telegram from Manila says the Nevada Cavalry left there for home on Friday on the transport Ohio -- cold night --

Monday Oct 2

Clear, cool & pleasant -- nearly finished my SL Tribune article -- Evening about town -- Bed at 11 -- Fifty Years ago today I landed in San Francisco from around Cape Horn and old Plymouth home which I left on the 18th day of March 1849 -- Fifty years ago -- Hadn't a cent in my pocket when I landed, and same today -- In yesterdays Sunday Examiner Magazine -- San F -- I found a picture of Miss Rose Frances Blumpkin a young girl of 18, a bold gambler, at Dawson, Klondike -- Her picture very much resembles my younger daughter May Goodwin Doten, same age.

Tuesday Oct 3

Same -- colder -- Ice formed all over town this morning and along sidewalks where water was thrown out of saloons, etc -- PM I finished my Tribune Australian Ballot article, 6 pages & sent it -- Also sent 4 pages on same subject to the SF Chronicle -- Evening about town -- very cold -- saloons

etc all had to have fires -- Bed 11 -- freezing weather -- Put on thicker undershirt and double socks this PM --

Wednesday Oct 4

Same -- The snowsheds near Cisco, on the Railroad were burned for about two miles last night, so the mail from California did not come through -- but the SF papers came -- Passengers & mail will be delayed for a day or two -- PM wrote & sent 2 page letter to wife -- also mailed Sept no of magazine to Jim Townsend Bodie -- & wrote a 2 page letter & mailed it to him -- Great and glowing accounts of reception of Dewey in Washington Monday -- in all the papers -- Eyes sore & nose bothered with Hay fever, sneezing and bad coughing -- Dewey was presented with his sword of honor, by President McKinley today in Washington with great popular observances -- Richest & finest sword ever presented -- Pres't said: "There was no flaw in your victory; there shall be no faltering in maintaining it."

Same -- warmer -- No mail from the west this morning, railroad not being repaired sufficiently -- The PM local due here from Reno at 3:30 waited at Reno till the trains got through the burned place, repaired 2 miles --

and got to Carson at 6:15 bringing delayed mails, papers & express matter -- Road will be all right shortly -- Freight trains can pass Saturday -- damage $60,000 -- supposed incendiary work -- Milton Smith who was barkeep at the Arlington last Spring and went to Bodie to same position, returned today & went back again -- having secured a job here -- says Jim Townsend has sold his paper, the Bodie Miner-Index a few days ago. Old Jim is too sick & broken down to run it any longer. He will come in from there & probably go to his married daughter's home in Oakland --

Friday Oct 6

Same -- PM wrote & sent 2 page letter to Geo R Vardy, Wells Herald, dunning him for the $25 he promised to pay me -- Met Ex Gov Blasdel and Old Joe Douglass at train this morning, going up to VA from San F -- Train in on time at 9:30 AM -- brought all the back letter mails -- Road repaired & running all right -- About 6:30 PM Oscar W Doud deliberately shot himself in the head with a pistol and died on back porch of Mrs Joseph Cowing's residence where he room, just north of Ellsworth House -- Cause ill health

Saturday Oct 7

Same -- The great international yacht race at New York, between the English yacht Shamrock and the American yacht Columbia was today again declared off, as there was not breeze enough -- only a "drifting match" -- This is the third day, each resulting the same -- The distance is 30 miles, and time limit 5 1/2 hours -- The Va Report says [A J McCon?] has bought the old boilers at the Combination shaft & will remove them for sale elsewhere --

Sunday Oct 8

Same -- Mail 2 1/2 hours late -- At noon Mike Conlon my best old Comstock miner friend found me -- He just in from the prospecting trip, horseback, over in Alpine County, Cal, Markleeville etc -- on way home to Comstock -- when he found me he concluded to stay over till tomorrow -- PM we were together some --

J F Haley with Cut Block of Sam Davis -- 1899 Mike Conlon with Me -- I in SL Tribune 26 3/4 Inches "A Milk White Flag" -- Newlands in Carson & Como Jim Townsend Retires

I wrote & sent letter to J F Haley Reno to send me ten copies of the Nevada Magazine, September tomorrow and charge same to my account -- Also sent him the half tone block cut of Sam Davis -- Took Supper with Michael Conlon & we cruised about town some -- Bed at 10:30, he taking room & bed at my hotel -- Mike gave me the cane I wear, three or four years ago at Virginia --

Monday Oct 9

Same -- Mike Conlon remained visiting with me and not allowing me to pay for the entertainment -- The SL Tribune of Saturday, the 7th inst contained my communication on Australian Ballot which I sent last Tuesday the 3d inst -- 26 3/4 inches [umpareil?] type -- Evening, a strong and good dramatic co from the East at Opera House in "A Milk White Flag" -- very amusing variety play -- Fair house -- I didn't attend - Congressman Newlands been in Carson & vincinty last for last few days -- sent his family to Washington & will be there himself in time to be at opening of Congress, first Monday in December -- Saw J J Hepworth of Dayton this evening & he says Newland's paid Como a visit yesterday with Bob Logan -- Bed 12 -- cloudy, change of weather impending --

Variable & breezy & cold like "Fall of the Year" -- Van Duzer came on morning train from Reno -- My grand good old friend Mike Conlon got away for the Comstock about 1 PM -- I went down to Raycrofts stable with him & saw him off in his own good style -- old white hoss, with blankets & comforter thrown across instead of saddle, bale rope bridle, etc -- Evening
