Also sent letter on morning train to J L Considine, editor of the Va report, about the death of the Record -- Bed 11

Thursday Nov 2

Clear & very pleasant -- Proofs rec'd from Winnemucca of Part III, also letter from A C Pratt in response to mine of Tuesday, confirming & certifying to gift to me of the History of Nevada -- August 9 -- also got another bundle of Philadelphia Inquirer of Sunday Oct 29 with more chapters continuation of the "The Clown's Protege or Jim's Baby" -- still "to be continued" -- PM I read my proofs very carefully and returned them in a letter to Van Duzer by evening train -- Just 50 years ago today I started out from Stockton Cal with several others of the Pilgrim Mining Co, bound for Woods' Creek in the gold placer diggings, 70 miles -- Had my first nights camping out that night --

Friday Nov 3

Cloudy -- moderate -- This evening the much noted big prize fight between Jim Jeffries, the champion of the world, and Tom Sharkey for the said championship took place at Coney Island, New York -- Telegrams complete of each & every round were received at Criterion Saloon -- in the hall upstairs -- densely crowded -- I was there 25 rounds

limit -- fought to the limit of 25 rounds -- came out about even, but the fight for the championship, had to be decided in favor of Jeffries, as Sharkey failed to take it away from him in the 25 rounds limit -- Bed 11 -- Arrived at Woods' creek and the gold diggings and camped there 2 days from Stockton just 50 years ago this evening -- 1 mile below Jamestown --

Saturday Nov 4

Cloudy, blustering, dusty, disagreeable day -- The Morning Appeal and the Reno Journal this morning had full telegrams of the fight by rounds complete -- I sent short letter to J W Considine, editor of the Va Daily Report -- Rec'd letter from wife this PM -- Also one from Col Wm Nelson of Tribune inclosing sample of yearly review of State progress, for Tribune -- Met Leslie F Bell, storekeeper and he still further confirmed my title to the (Pratt) History of Nevada.

Sunday Nov 5

Clear & pleasant -- PM sent letter to wife returning Bessie's & also sending wife October Magazine --

Monday Nov 6

Cloudy & cold -- Sent statement of "string" to Tribune and Chronicle for October -- also letters to Townsend and to Van Duzer -- First issue of The Ledger, a new weekly at Reno today -- was the old Plaindealer -- by R R Crawford --

Tuesday Nov 7

Cloudy -- by morning mail rec'd Jim Townsend's photo from him at Oakland -- very good -- cabinet size -- no hat on -- mailed it with brief note to Van Duzer this evening -- composed a 3 page letter to send to Eunice -- Capt Linscott's company Nevada Cavalry, 52 in number returning from Manila, arrived at San Francisco Sunday -- well received by Gov Sadler, Lieut Gov Judge, & other Nevadans and friends -- breakfasted by Newlands, and marched to Presidio where they are to be mustered out in ten days -- Regiments of soldiers from the east and middle & western states pass through Reno almost daily, bound for Manila -- The Boers still continue beating the English -- got much the best of it thus far -- Their troops outnumber the English, at present -- England in organizing fresh regiments, and hastening them to the front as fast as possible --

Wednesday Nov 8

Cloudy, with a few light showers -- During the last few days, at odd times I have been reading "Bob, Son of Battle," the book Lizzie sent me for my last birthday present -- finished it today -- 356 pages -- North of Ireland -- Scotch shepherds and their "collies" and "tykes" -- specially the Gray Dogs of Kenmuir -- Dialogue -- Principally scotch dialect -- very interesting --

The municipal election San F, yesterday went Democratic -- Phelan Mayor -- The

C S Mann Letter Returned, Reconstructed & Re-sent Sister Eunice -- Van Duzer with Receipt book & Authority The Clown's Protege -- "Route" Pronounced -- C S Mann

letter I wrote to C S Mann, Maple Glen Penna Sunday, Oct 29, returned this morning having been gone only nine days -- The following was stamped across its face: "Returned from Cleveland Ohio Nov 3 PM, 1899 -- No such office in State named" -- Quick work --

Thursday Nov 9

Cloudy & warm with only a very light sprinkle or two -- snowing in the summits most of day -- Discovered that my returned letter of yesterday was wrongly directed by myself to Maple Gove instead of to Maple Glen, which was why it was so promptly returned -- So I remailed it with explanations, apologies, etc to C S Mann, Maple Glen, Montgomery County, Pa, with request that he reply, telling if the magazine was received or no -- as it might have been directed right -- Also copied or rewrote a good letter to Sister Eunice, Santa Clara -- over 3 pages -- Also received brief note from Van Duzer with a receipt book and authorization to canvass for subscribers to the Nevada Magazine -- Also rec'd the Philad'a Inquirer of last Sunday with continuation of the "The Clown's Protege or Jim's Baby" -- Bed 12 --

Same -- AM good strong showers -- PM some light ones -- PM wrote full four page letter & sent it to Sister Cornelia -- Good one -- The Reno Gazette says that Newlands left there yesterday morning for Washington making a short stop at Lovelock -- Bed 11 -- clear & warm --

Saturday Nov 11

Rainy -- Several good rains during day and evening -- PM I was at office rooms of Prof Ring the State Supt of Pub Instruction, overhauling the old register and record of the Pacific Coast Pioneers -- Rec'd brief note from Hon J P Jones dated Washington Nov 6, but postmarked New York, saying: "My dear Doten -- Your various letters have been received, for which I wish to express my thanks to you. I am going out to the coast very soon, and will see you when I get to Carson, and hope to have the opportunity of talking matters over with you fully. Very truly yours, John P Jones." I mailed reply tonight, thanking him & would be glad to see him etc -- Also rec'd letter from Nelson -- last letter, about State Prison not yet published -- will rely on me for annual review of Nevada -- Also sent short letter to Wells Drury -- Evening down town awhile -- Bed 12 -- raining steadily -- Met Frank S Cox and bride, Miss Lizzie McAvoy at depot this morning, just married this morning and on local train bound for Reno --
