46 -- Va BB Club Beats Carson 12 to 1 -- April Fool Day Indian Joe Pete Escapes -- Van Duzer -- Big Snow Storm 8 inches -- Funeral of Mrs Yandell -- Moved into Alta "Stone" Lodging House

Sunday April 1, 1900

Variable with blustering SW winds -- Virginia Base Ball club came down and beat the Carson club, at race track 12 to 1 -- great time -- Indian Pete, the condemned to be hung Indian murderer, escaped from the jail at Genoa last night & not recaptured -- I sent a page letter to Van Duzer -- Bed 11 -- Very light sprinkle of rain, commencing -- Moved into present Alta lodging House day before yesterday -- April Fool Day, etc --

Monday April 2

AM Cloudy, blustery & threatening from the SW -- snowing in the mountains -- the body of Mrs Laura Yandell, formerly Mrs Calvin, of Virginia in my early days there, daughter of Judge J W Noyes arrived from San Francisco, accompanied by her son Charley & wife, sister Mary, now Mrs Chamberlain & others -- Funeral took place at 3 PM from the Presbyterian church -- Well Attended -- and over 20 carriages followed hearse to cemetery north of town -- Died in consequence of a surgical operation in San F -- great friend of mine and I feel very sad at her loss -- good woman -- About 4 PM a heavy snowstorm set in continuing into the evening -- Bed at 11 -- about 8 inches on the streets -- although much had melted -- not snowing but darkly clouded and threatening more cold --

10 Inch Snowstorm -- Biggest for 20 Years -- 1900 Trick Bicycle Riding -- Sam Jones & Charley Colburn Arrive

Tuesday April 3

Cloudy -- Variable -- full ten inches of snow fell, but the warm light loamy soil of Carson absorbed it like a sponge and before night with sunny PM none remained except in shaded places, and the streets were very little muddy -- about an inch fell at Virginia, none at Reno -- and none at Cradlebaugh's bridge, 8 miles south of Carson -- So the storm must have run about east from west and was about 20 miles wide -- Glorious good storm for Carson & vicinity -- At noon a couple of bicyclists gave open air exhibition of best trick riding anybody every saw, on the broad concrete pavement in front of Post office -- From San Francisco, traveling -- PM penciled letter to J P Jones -- Bed 11 -- cloudy & cool -- Charley Colburn of Va who went down to Costa Rica to Superintend Senator Jones' mine, recently returned and is now made general superintendent of the lumbering business at Overton -- This evening's Va Report says:

Wednesday April 4

Clear & pleasant -- Met my old Comstock Va friend Tom McDonald in town this AM -- came on morning train to stop a few days at Shaw's hot springs,

north of town -- He made a winning of $500 on lottery, couple of weeks ago -- and is enjoying it -- Evening attended Republican meeting at Court House -- first of the campaign -- selected delegates to be voted for at the primaries next Saturday to the State Convention Apr 19th -- Also started a Republican Club with 55 signing the roll, Alf Doten included -- Bed 11:30, cold -- Penjade gave me a new pint bottle of "Trib" today -- I used up last of other one this morning, using it faithfully every morning & evening from the first -- cold icy morning -- fruit blossoms out probably hurt --

Thursday April 5

Same -- PM wrote on Jones letter -- Bed 11

Friday April 6

Variable -- Finished & sent 5 page letter to Hon J P Jones, Washington, D.C. Bed 11 -- cloudy, blustering, light sprays of snow or rain -- The general discussion of the day is now Dewey's big Presidential blunder --

Wife -- Republican Primaries -- $500 Reward for Joe Pete 1900 -- Cold Snap -- Palm Sunday -- Palm Sunday and Easter Brunswick Lode Size -- S H Neff, Biog Pub Co Harry Day's Renewed Application

Saturday April 7

Variable & cold, with a few very light hail storms -- got letter from wife, & sent her a 2 page one in return -- PM, Republican primaries at Curry engine house for 7 delegates to State Convention here on the 19th inst --

Chas E Bray, Robt Grimmon, T R Hofer, Arthur G Meyers, George T Mills, Saml Platt, George A Tyrrell were elected -- no opposition -- 81 votes cast -- Indian Joe Pete, the convicted & condemned murderer to be hung who escaped recently from Douglas Co jail at Genoa still at large -- Sheriff Brockliss offers $500 for him dead or alive --

Sunday April 8

Same -- colder -- snowing in the Sierra most of the day -- Harry Day, Postmaster, received a letter the other day from S H Neff, Biographical Pub Co, Chicago dated Apr 2, inquiring for some historical write up of Ormsby County -- turned it over to me, so I replied to it this PM, saying didn't know of anything special on that line published except in connecting else of Nevada but would write it if desired -- Bed 11 -- clear & freezing cold -- Palm Sunday today -- evergreens blessed at church and distributed -- Harry Day got off his application to President for renewed Postmastership this evening mail, with all indorsements, etc --

Monday April 9

Clear, cool and pleasant -- Postal card from Shortstory Pub Co, receipt for M.S.S. & remittance & will mail Black Cat, commencing April -- Sent short letter

to Van Duzer -- Colcord told me he had rec'd letter from Roberts for me to go ahead with my Comstock Report, according to my own ideas, forwarding through him, Colcord -- Bed 11:30 --

Tuesday April 10

Same -- Studying up my Comstock report -- Met Charley Colburn from Jones' Costa Rica mine down from Va where he has been the last week -- told lots about that country -- Going back there before long -- Bed 11:30 -- Heavy frosts last few mornings -- Found a copy of Sears, Roebuck & Cos big catalogue The Consumers Guide at express office for me -- No charges -- Rec'd also "Black Cat" for April -- Met C W Patterson, ed & prop of Yerington Rustler at the train & had quite a chat -- just in from Lovelock -- going to start new weekly paper there called "The Argus" -- independent paper -- Lovelock Tribune is already located & running there, and next is the Standard -- all weeklies -- small room for 3 in a bed --
