Friday June 29

Same -- 90° -- The graduating, or "commencement" exercises of the Carson public schools took place this evening at the Opera House -- very pleasing & satisfactory -- House full -- Bed at 11 --

Saturday June 30

88° -- PM cloudy, breezy, temperate -- Made a new shirt and got my hair cut -- Bed 12 -- Pearl Robert 13 years old yesterday, the 29th of June --

The Elks on Deck -- Wife -- The Oregon Lost -- 1900 Off for the Fourth -- Carson River Catfish

Sunday July 1

Clear, cloudy, very pleasant -- A big lodge of the Elks, was inaugurated last evening at Reno -- A lodge came over from Nevada City California to assist -- About 40 of them -- They went up on morning train at 10:30 -- but came back about 3 PM in various stable rigs -- visited the State Prison, made merry & dined in Carson & left on evening train at 6:30 for Reno & home -- An exceedingly pleasing & jolly crowd -- Sent a 2 page letter to wife -- Bed 12 --

Monday July 2

Same -- Bed 12 -- Our boss battleship Oregon which went ashore last Thursday on the Chinese coast reported in status quo -- probably lost -- Nobody lost

Tuesday July 3

Same -- 78° -- The Indian School Band, Carson Base Ball club, et al -- 2 coaches full, went to Wadsworth by evening train, to assist in celebration tomorrow there, being no celebration here -- Evening much cracker & bomb explosive hilarity anticipating the Fourth -- I dined on Carson river catfish, presented by Andy Robert --

90 -- The Glorious Fourth -- Democratic National Convention

Wednesday July 4

Clear & fine -- 88° -- PM breezy -- A few flags displayed and plenty of crackers, and bombs, etc, but no special celebration here or in Reno -- pretty good one at Va, also at Gardnerville and also at Steamboat Springs -- Best one at Wadsworth, attended by Indian Band and many from here -- $2.90 round trip -- Two carloads from Reno and one from here went to Virginia -- I came near going there also but changed my mind and loafed about Carson -- At 10:45 telegrams on the Arlington Bulletin board said: Reno wins (50 mile) relay race Sacramento vs Reno by one mile -- Keddie of Reno breaks coast record -- 5 miles -- 2:10 -- Best mile unpaced by Keddie, 2:18 -- average mile 2:26 -- Carson wins base ball game at Wadsworth -- score 7 to 6 -- Bed 12 -- Democratic National Convention at Kansas City, Nebraska met today, but accomplished nothing beyond preliminary arrangements --

Thursday July 5

Same -- 90° -- All hands Indian Band, base ballers, bikers, et al returned from Wadsworth, Reno, etc, triumphant & all right -- Bed 12 -- The Dem Nat Convention at Kansas City, nominated Bryan this PM by acclamation --

Friday July 6

Same -- Kansas nominations completed and convention adjourned sine die -- Bryan President and Adlai E Stevenson of Illinois for Vice President -- S was Vice President under Cleveland's 2nd and last term -- A very weak ticket, which will be beaten about 16 to 1 in November -- Bed 12 -- Received today brief note from George E Roberts, Director of the Mint, Washington D.C. dated June 25, directed to Mr Alfred Boten* Carson, Nevada, as follows: Dear Sir -- I am in receipt of your favor of June 14th and have to thank you for the interesting specimen of Nevada pine, taken from the Comstock mine. George E Roberts --

Clear, fine & warm -- 90° -- As usual -- Evening sent 2 page letter to wife -- Big crowd attended band open air concert in Capitol Park -- Yesterday

Mr & Mrs Robert, and Mr and Mrs Burlington went fishing up the river Carson, to Jones Dam -- 10 miles -- Caught 3 fine trout and couple hundred catfish -- So I got 8 nice little catfish ones for my dinner -- very fine -- good as trout, or better --

Sunday July 8

Same -- 88° -- AM made best neck tie of all -- PM met John J Hepworth from Como, was there when I was, and is still trying to develop a paying mine there -- Also met John Dobbie, Old Comstocker, who went down to work in Jones Costa Rica mine 2 yrs ago this fall, staid there 6 months & returned to stay on the old Comstock -- Bed 12 --

Monday July 9

Same -- PM met my old friend Louis ("Joe") Guggenheim just pardoned out of State Prison -- Happy to see him out -- Judge Hebbard of San Francisco decides Reno marriages all right -- Bed 12 -- Guggenheim went to SF tonight -- Got letter from wife -- Says Alfred chosen ass't Principal of Wadsworth public school --

My Final Statement of Account with Nevada Magazine -- 1900 Dr H D Cogswell Dead -- $50 Deposit Drawn Nevada Schools Apportionment

Tuesday July 10

Same -- 87° -- PM I wrote 2 page pen letter to Van Duzer, Winnemucca, inclosing a full page statement of my financial account with the Nevada

Magazine from first to last -- charged $80 for write-up of "Carson, the Capitol City of Nevada," and Parts I, II, and III of "The Early Journalism of Nevada" -- $20 each -- total $80 -- Receipts from cash, $14, advertising collected and 49 subscribers at $1 each -- commission deducted -- Total receipts $67.70 -- Balance due me $12.30 -- Will send it to Van Duzer tomorrow -- In SF Examiner of yesterday found account of death of Dr Henry D Cogswell, San Francisco, who was at Curtis' Creek gold diggings and Woods' where I was in winter of '49 -- Big dentist in San Francisco and capitalist since then -- died very wealthy -- 80 yrs old -- Had to draw out my deposit of $50 today --

Wednesday July 11

Same -- sent my letter and statement to Van Duzer -- Bed 12 --

94 -- Nevada Magazine -- 3 New Shirts -- Wells Drury Tom Hulley Dead -- V & T Officials -- Lamy's Vacation

Fine and warm -- 88° -- Finished up and mailed my formal financial statement of my connection with the Nevada Magazine as agent & similarly stated yesterday -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 --

Thursday July 12

Same -- Bought me 3 new, vari-colored shirts -- 6 bits each -- Bed 11 --

Friday July 13

Same -- My good old Comstock, 6 mile Canyon friend for about 36 yrs Tom
