Austin -- Dist Atty there -- about 26 yrs old -- Son of old Sam, firm of Crescengo & Gandolfo keeping the International Hotel when I was there -- Met him at the Arlington about noon -- Was overjoyed to meet me -- Had to dine with him -- We had big talk about old and present Austin -- Hadnt seen each other since I left there, but we knew each other almost without introduction -- Spoke of my family & sent kindest regards to all of them -- PM I wrote a circular begging letter for W Hy Doane, Secy of the Agricultural Society, to Stewart, Jones, Newlands, et al to donate money to help run the Fair -- Also wrote a page & a 1/2 letter to wife -- Bed at 11 -- Didnt squander a cent today -- Got 2 page letter from Dr J L Cogswell, San Francisco today -- Didn't think I had any show for writing up his brothers biographical obituary -- said no money provision for it in his last will --

Sunday Sept 2

Same -- Warmer -- Big funeral of Miss Edith Jones this PM -- Her brother did not arrive from eastern part of the State in time for it but will probably get here tomorrow -- Commenced a letter to Dr Cogswell's widow on same subject as to his brother -- will send it tomorrow -- Bed 11:30 -- Have somehow contrived to get a big lively cold in my head since yesterday -- sneezing viciously & often, with watery nose and eyes -- Another economical day even a nickel more than yesterday (for matches) very

warm PM and evening -- Extra warm night --

Monday Sept 3

AM clear and sultry -- 88[degrees] -- PM cloudy and a few light showers during the evening cooled and regulated the atmosphere finely -- cloudburst at Reno -- At the request of Sam Crescengo I put a nice little item in the News this evening making good mention of him as connected with other attorneys having business before the Supreme Court the last few days -- Got him some copies of the paper and he left for Reno on evening train -- left an order at Arlington & paid for it in advance to give me a nice chicken dinner next Sunday -- Felt pretty sick all day from my cold -- little better tonight -- PM I finished my four page letter to Mrs Dr

Mrs Dr Henry D Cogswell -- With Nev Magazine Mrs Craven Gone Crazy Public Schools and State University Reopened

Henry D Cogswell, San Francisco and sent it to her this evening's train, together with copy of Sept number of the Nevada Magazine -- I want the job of writing up his obituary memoirs in accordance with published statement in the SF Examiner -- This letter to Mrs Cogswell is substantially a copy of my two letters to Dr J L Cogswell -- I took a big dose of Tim Dempsey's specific for a cold and went home to bed at 11 -- and straight to sleep -- Mrs Nettie R Craven is stated to have gone crazy over her failure to prove herself to be the contract wife of James G Fair deceased --

Suit was brought and is pending against her for perjury, establishing a pretty clear case of it which would send her to State Prison, so she is evidently shamming crazy, prefering a lunatic asylum to the State Prison -- The public schools and the University reopened yesterday, so that puts all my family at educational work -- Wife in public school, Sam & Goodwin in University and Alfred at Wadsworth --

Tuesday Sept 4

Cloudy, pleasant & much cooler -- Arose this morning feeling 100 per cent better, & I think it was from the dose Dempsey gave me before I went to bed -- commenced taking a 2 grain capsule morning and night of quinine this morning, and will follow it up throughout my hay fever season, which has been heretofore middle of Sept to middle or last of October -- but feel like it had started in earlier than usual from my big sneezing of the last day of 2 -- PM wrote & sent letter to C D Van Duzer, again asking him to return my Pioneer article, letter to Hall Chemical Co for sample of advertised anti-fat treatment, inclosing 4 cts postage for return and letter to Sunshine, Box E, Augusta, Maine for advertised lighting calculating pencil & year subscription to Sunshine -- monthly paper -- Met Senator Comins of White Pine, arrived in season to attend the Silver and Democratic State Convention at Virginia, day after tomorrow --

Democratic and Silver State Conventions Silver Party Fused and Cremated

Wednesday Sept 5

Cloudy & cooler -- breezy -- Many delegates etc -- gathering in or passing up to attend the Democratic and Silver State Conventions tomorrow at Virginia City -- Busy at room most of day -- Bed 11:30 -- My cold of the last 2 or 3 days is well -- feel 1st rate --

Thursday Sept 6

Same -- Silver party and Democratic State conventions at Va today did not get beyond temporary organization, selection of some committees, etc -- Held evening session each -- I was at morning train at 10 & saw the crowd of delegates from all parts of the State going up to Va -- Bed 11 -- clear & cold --

Friday Sept 7

Same -- The two conventions at Va yesterday closed today sine die -- They fused, the Silver party being gobbled in & swallowed out of all further right or record by the good old Democratic party -- Only nominations allowed the Silver Party were Richard Kirman for Presidential elector and J N Evans of Washoe County for long term Regent State University -- The full ticket nominated stands as follows: Presidential Electors: John H Dennis of

Democratic Nominations -- Wells Herald Burned 1900 -- Letter from Wife -- Prof Ring Visits Bessie's School -- My Last $5

Francis G Newlands, Washoe; Justice of Supreme Court, Al Fitzgerald, Eureka; University Regents, long term, J N Evans, Washoe; short term, W W Booker of Elko -- A Democratic State Central Committe was selected, with CH Stoddard of Reno as Chairman, and John H Dennis of Reno, Secretary. Judge Fitzgerald and Congressman Newlands addressed the convention and there was other speechifying. No more Silver Party -- all fused into Democratic bullion and cooled down to regular party shape and work -- Delegates, et al left for home by evening train, many stopping off here -- Met many of them at the Arlingtoon this evening -- The Wells Herald office was destroyed by fire night before last -- loss $2,000 -- no insurance -- Some of the material was saved.

Saturday Sept 8

Clear, cool, & very pleasant -- Some Conventionalists still staid over & some left on tonights train -- Recd letter from wife -- All busy in school work, Alfred at Wadsworth, etc -- Prof Ring returned from visit to San Jose, Cal, Called on Bessie & her school while there, etc -- Down to my last $5 tonight -- Bed 12 --
