so that he was there only about 24 hours or less & had to get on to Chicago in obedience to telegraphic orders received -- where he overtook Dr Stubbs and wife, and came on, arriving at Reno one day ahead of them -- He had an eventful & exceedingly interesting trip with little time to rest & was very tired -- I was about town day and evening -- bed 12 -- clear & cold

Same -- Rec'd copy of the Old Colony Memorial, Plymouth, forwarded from Reno by wife containing annexed item about Sam -- Wrote & sent 2 full page letter to wife -- Bed 11:30 -- clear & freezing hard --

Monday Dec 3

Clear and pleasant -- About town -- Evening a good variety company from San Francisco, I think, played a 3 act farce comedy entitled "The Bell Boy" at the Opera House -- good audience, and lively & amusing performance -- I didn't attend -- but met some of the gents of the troupe afterward at the Arlington & we had a very pleasant chat together -- about past times on the old Comstock and the theatrical profession of the early days -- especially Harry Armstrong a leading man in the troupe -- John M Walsh or Welsh is proprietor or manager -- Bed 1 -- clear & freezing --

Same -- Heavy white frost in the morning, as usual lasting all day in the shade -- Sent letter to E G Siggers -- Patent soliciting Dept Washington, D.C. for his book on patents -- Also the Dr Austin Albro, Box 229, Augusta Maine -- Also the Dr F G Kinsman Box 952, Augusta, Me, both of these last 2 letters being for "Heart Tablets" for heart disease, which they advertise to send sample box free -- Inclosed 2 ct stamp in each for postage on return -- Evening, Boston Concert Co at Opera House -- Walther the famous Belgian violinist, Miss Roddy fine singer, Miss Durrell, very clever in sketches and Miss Cummings splendid pianist -- Good show & good house -- Bed 12 -- cold

Wednesday Dec 5

Same -- Evening at Opera House -- Free show -- "The Great South African Salesman" House crowded -- Sold lots of jewelry, snide & otherwise -- had piano music, and a young assistant with guitar and some songs -- also some fun with some of the small kids of Carson -- But the boss was the slickest salesman, and the cleanest, most truthful bunco game man on earth -- He roped in lots of money -- $365 dollars from the people of Carson, including numerous representative ladies -- good Carson society crowd -- Slickest bunco game I ever saw -- Sold watches, rings, jewelry, cutlery, and his

Same -- The grand Fakir who ran the Opera House and the people of Carson last night registered at the Arlington as I Cramwell ("Ike") and his assistant Chas Schank. They took the AM train at 10 for Reno -- He said to his audience last night that he would be more talked about today than anybody in Carson, and he has been all this day, everybody admiring him for his ability to play suckers and ridiculing themselves or friends for suckers -- Sent letter to Van Duzer for [cuts?] -- Bed at 12 -- clear bright moonlight and freezing --

Same -- Evening I attended recital of AJ Waterhouse, humorist and poet at Opera House -- several recitations humorous and otherwise -- Very good -- slim audience but appreciative -- Second lecture of the Dr Thomas course -- the Boston Concert Co being the 1st -- Next & last comes Hon FX Schoonmaker -- Bed 12 --

train, on business and returned in evening -- PM I wrote a 2 1/2 page letter to wife & mailed it -- 4 PM by special invitation I went down to Harry Day's & dined with he & Mary -- Fine roast chicken. Plymouth Rock rooster, she raised in back yard -- hatched last spring -- weighed 8 lbs dressed -- cranberry sauce, baked sweet potatoes, orange pie, apples, oranges & bananas -- Passed pleasant evening with gramophone music, stories, etc -- She lived at Milpitas with her uncle for 3 years about 10 yrs ago -- Bed 11:30 -- commencing to rain --

Rain -- Wife with $5 -- My New Suit Received -- 1900 P L Flanigan (No 2) -- Jake Becker of Reno Dead My New Coat on Reno Marriage Invalidated Again

Monday Dec 10

Same -- Streets muddy from the rain showers of last night -- got letter from wife with $5 -- Borrowed some more and got my package of clothes from Sears, Roebuck & Co which arrived at Express office Saturday -- Coat & vest $8.00 -- Pants $1.75 -- charge for extra size $2.00 advance cost $1.00 deducted -- $10.75 -- freight $1.50 -- for transmission of cash 25 c -- Total $12.50 -- Took package home to room -- all turned out fine as far as I could judge -- will see better tomorrow -- Bed 12 -- Cloudy & cold --

AM cloudy -- PM cleared up fine -- PM wrote & sent another letter to Hon P L Flanigan, Reno for $100 -- Jake J Becker of Reno died this PM of pneumonia --

Evening I wore my new coat about town -- fits finely -- Bed 12 clear & cold -- Judge Troutt of the Superior Court, San Francisco decided yesterday that the Reno-California divorce marriages are invalid (See last page of this book).

Wednesday Dec 12

Same as yesterday -- Coldest morning with heaviest white frost -- Met Dan Gloster -- from his home in Sierra Valley, Cal -- was at Virginia City yesterday & came from there this evening for a stopover of a day or two in Carson -- He is on his old business, life insurance, liquor drumming, etc -- Bed 12 -- clear & cold --

Clear & pleasant -- Wore my new vest as well as coat this PM & evening -- Bed 12 -- clear & cold

Friday Dec 14

Very stormy & Wintry -- Morning a heavy blustering west wind -- About 10:30 commenced raining -- soon turned to heavy snowstorm -- lasting most of the PM -- About 4 or 5 inches carpeted the town -- Heavier snow in the mountains -- Evening storm broke by degrees and at 11 when I went home from the Arlington, 'twas clear, starlight & dam cold -- Rec'd letter from P L Flanigan
