to wife to that effect -- Through Doc Benton I met John F Uhlhorn at the Arlington -- knew each other well in the printing business in my palmy Gold Hill News days -- Havent seen him for about 30 years and we didn't recognize each other -- He looked different -- bigger by nearly 100 pounds etc -- He is now here on a smelting works arrangement -- Had a long & joyous chat together -- Also met Mayenbaum the lawyer ad Jimmy Eagan, whom I knew in Austin -- Bed at 10 -- Daggett died in San Francisco day before yesterday of tumor of the liver -- Great notices of his death in all the papers -- Native of Ohio, born Feb 22, 1831 -- over 70 yrs old now --

Variable -- stormy -- big blustering winds from the SW -- Strong shower of rain about 8 AM, but clouds broke for rest of the day -- Evening clear but very windy -- from the SW -- Evening at Livingstons hearing telegraphic report of big prize fight between Jeffries and Ruhlin at Mechanics Pavilion San Francisco -- Ruhlin beaten in five rounds -- fairly outclassed -- Bed at 11 -- Got letter from Wm Nelson of SL Tribune, for me to write up Nevada for New Years issue -- Bought me a new walking stick or cane today at Mrs Fox's store -- counterpart of my old Mike Conlon cane, which is worn too short -- Paid 4 bits for it -- old one cost $1.00 --

Variable -- Bed 10 -- The Salt Lake Tribune tells of big earthquake in Southern part of Utah -- "At Beaver the court house was wrecked, and the Murdock building of the Brigham Young Academy Branch School completely shattered -- Panic among people at several places."

Same -- Sent page letter to wife by evening train -- Bed 10 -- Put on my new pants, recd Dec 10th last from Sears Roebuck & Co for first time today -- cost $2 -- Havent needed them till now -- first rate all the same -- Shall wear them regularly -- Met Albert Lackey at evening train leaving Gold Hill with his family to make their future home at Oakland California -- Been Supt of the Overman mine 23 years and now returns with money enough to make him comfortable in his nice new home -- He is 65 years or more of age --
