barrels of water -- Has to haul all his water -- At 1 1/2 reached his camp on top of hill __ Very comfortable arrangement -- good stable, chicken house, etc -- We got dinner -- Then rigged up with overalls, jumper etc. & we went down through his

Ed Harris Mine At Reno

mine in all parts -- 4 levels -- 210 ft to lowest -- Been worked about 175 feet East & West on vein -- vein from 6 inches to 2 1/2 ft wide -- mostly silver, but some of it ran very rich indeed -- in gold -- so that he pounded out several thousand dollars in gold with hand mortar -- 5 men working -- Not taking much ore -- I had a good sweat climbing down & up the incline ladders -- Ed discovered this mine about two years ago -- Took supper, & then Ed took me in wagon down to Washoe City -- at 7:32 I took train for Reno -- arrived at 8:10 -- Met wife at depot -- Home -- Bed tired at 10 1/2 --

Reno Engrossing

Saturday Jan 24 Clear & pleasant -- Was about town 3 or 4 times today, with wife, Sammy, Bessie et al -- Bought wife nice new cloak or coat, and other things -- Got new underskirts & socks for myself -- Evening at home -- Bed at 11 --

Sunday Jan 25

The same -- Took morning train for Carson -- Met Judge Rising, Hank Mitchell and CC Stevenson going up to Va -- Pleasant chat with them, Stevenson especially -- Met lots more Comstockers today in Carson -- PM & evening I engrossed 3 long bills:

Elections, Act for relief of debtors & protection of creditors -- Worked late -- Bed at 1 1/2 -- At Harris' main yesterday I got some specimens of the mineral called Tourmaline -- white quartz with long black streaky crystals running through it -- Composition -- silica, alumina, magnesia, boracia acid, fluorine oxides of iron -- rather rare mineral -- of no value except as a cabinet curiosity -- quite a ledge of it a short distance from Harris --

Engrossing Salary

Monday Jan 26

Clear & pleasant -- As usual -- Attended session -- gave my three engrossed bills to Powell, Chairman of committee on Engrossment, and he gave me four more to engross -- Evening I slept awhile on bed -- then worked till 4 -- engrossed two bills: relative to registration of voters, & to prevent fraud at elections, and relative to fees of grand and other jurors. Drew my 3d weeks salary today, $42, $6 per day --

Tuesday Jan 27

Cloudy & moderate -- engrossed 2 more bills, one relative to unpaid salaries of county officers, & the other relative to Justices of the Peace leave of absence --

PC Kelly W Crane Enterprise Reduced

Also engrossed Senate Bill No 36, to provide for the better preservation of the Mining Records of the State -- this makes 8 bills that I have engrossed -- Evening Opera House with Assemblyman AT Stearns of White Pine, on passes given me by John Piper this forenoon -- Ben Cotton with wife, Nellie, and daughter Idaline and stock company, in "beautiful comedy-drama, True Devotion. Very nice and pleasing little play -- good house -- Home at 11 1/2 -- Wrote letters to Chas W Crane, Los Gatos, California, PC Kelly, Austin, and Andrew Lawson, Gold Hill (Am Flat) Bed at 3 -- The Enterprise was reduced in size on the 15th of this month, to a 28 column paper -- 7 columns to the page, instead of 8, and the columns all made

2 inches shorter -- quite a reduction -- It is now about the size of the Va Chronide -- at noon today I met Mr Bigelow of the Nevada Bank, Va City in the State Capitol, and got me to sign a new note to John W Mackey, giving me up the old one of $2,000, borrowed April 14, 1878 Whole amount now, interest including $3, 673.14 for which I gave my note this day -- Never can pay it --

The same -- AM attended session -- PM engrossed two long bills: Senate bill No 7, An Act to facilitate the giving of bonds required by law -- and Senate Memorial and

went to theatre -- Piper passed me in -- Ben Cotton's troupe -- Play of "Irma the Waif" -- $127 house -- that of last evening was $270 -- so Piper told me -- After show was over I was at the Arlington House and met Piper & was introduced to Ben Cotton -- We had nice little chat together about old times and when he sent me at Como the words and music of the "Young Gal From Sonoma" -- Home -- Wrote etc -- Bed at 3 -- Have engrossed 10 bills, so far --

Thursday Jan 29

The same -- Got 2 more bills to engross this PM, making 12, so far -- Evening went to theatre -- Cotton troupe -- play of "Black Diamonds" -- very lively & pretty good -- lots of shooting & killing -- Home at 11 -- slept an hour & then re-engrossed Senate Bill No 38, to regulate fees, and compensation for official & other services in the State of Nevada, and Senate Bill No 45, To determine the order in which the reports of State officers and other shall be printed, and defining the number thereof -- Bed at 4 1/2 --

Clear & very pleasant -- This PM & evening I wrote Enterprise 78 & mailed it -- Was down town awhile in the evening -- Bed at 12 1/2 --

continued through PM & evening -- Delegates from all parts of the State -- John Marks, President of the Austin Miners Union was in, Also [Gilbert M & M Ross] formerly assayer in Gold Hill, now in from Humboldt, where he is a successful miner -- Resolutions were adopted telling our Senators & Representatives in Congress to stand in for unlimited free coinage of silver etc -- Society formed to be known

as the Nevada Production, and Reduction Society -- Stevenson President, and full set of officers chosen -- Through at 10 1/2 PM -- Adjourned sine die -- Home at 11 -- Engrossed Senate Bill No 39, Granting leave of absence to the County clerk and District Attorney [Truman] of Nye County -- Chas [Cheoneveth] Supt of Schools of Humboldt for six months, during their present term of office -- Through at 1 1/2 -- Bed -- This makes 13 bills engrossed --

Sunday February 1, 1885

Cloudy but moderate -- AM about town -- At 12 N I started engrossing and worked hard till 7 1/2 PM completing two long bills, one Senate Bill No 7, re-engrossed, "An Act to facilitate the giving of Bonds required by law" and the other Senate Bill No "An Act fixing the salaries of county officers in certain counties, and other matters relating thereto." These were long bills of 5 pages each -- and all I have on hand now -- They make 15 bills engrossed in all -- I hunted up Senator Powell, chairman of Committee on Engrossment & delivered them to him -- Was about
