Mr. Reads line of levels
upon which the bench marks
have been built terminate at
the 150th mile or at a point where
the surface of the Country is
427-20 feet below the Zero of the
above Table : at the 160th mile, or
at that point where the Canal
Channel for Irrigating purposes
terminates, the surface of the
Country will, I imagine, from the
above Table of Mr. Dodsworths,
be 435.54.-

From the above terminal
point to the Town of [Furnukabad?]
distance may be estimated
at 21 miles, and the level [fig...?]
at that place is 476.63 feet. In
21 miles therefore we have (to com=
=plete our Channel as a navi=
=gable line) to overcome a descent
of 41:19 or nearly 2 feet per mile
Allowing 437 feet or 5 1/4 inches
nearly per mile we should re=
=quire 4 Locks each with a drop
of 8 feet, to connect the 160th mile
of the Futtigurh Branch with
the Town of Funukabad, and
4 Locks more of the same di=
=mensions to connect it with
the Ganges River.-

I consider that the whole
question of navigation as it af=
=fects the Branch which we are
now describing, is one that
may well be left until its
value as an Irrigating Chan=
=nel has been sufficiently
proved. In carrying on the
works, therefore, I should refrain
in the 1st instance from under=
=taking either the Locks and
Lock
