was fine, in some placed appeared to have been cleaned & had a smooth polish & picked up a little bit that had fallen down.
Saw several bodies over head with the blk. [black] bitumen about them.
In no. 35 [Hoskins made careful drawing of this in 1833 & described it in book published 1863] we lighted our magnesium torches with brilliant success.
The walls are covered with interesting paintings many of which are recognized from Wilkerson.
Very fine view.
No. 16 [decipted?] [depicted] the fowling & fishing scene; also the entertainment where guests are smelling of the Lotus flower & being waited on by servants offering wine &c.
Passed through No.17 where are vases & necklaces on the wall.
Further on to the temple of Dayr el Bahree [Deir el-Bahri] entered by a red granite gate way a block of granite for each side & one for the top all with well cut hiero-glyphics.
The temple itself is of yellow sandstone of these hills - this is carefully cut & painted - saw the goddess Athor under form of a cow with royal infant - several vessels on the water - the water transparent - showing the fish in it.
Returning over the plain saw the house that Mr. Salt occuppied for several years - this part of the plain is a succession of mummy pits, & little mounds beside them.
Curious eye like stones scattered all over the plain.
Wilkinson lived in a tomb high up on the mountain.
Serviced at the first ferry saw the Brownes just landed on the opposite shore.
Reached home about 5 1/2.
The vice consul came to dinner - he is thin & grey, speaks very little
