We saw on the cataracts the [boys?] floating on logs, sometimes astride, sometimes, sometimes extended full length with face down, their clothing being advisedly wound round the head [for] as a turban.
I had one of our men watching the windows on each side our boat that no intruder should enter them.
Some of our new reis wore a dagger on the left arm above the elbow.
One wore there a red amulet.
It is very common to have an amulet suspended by a cord [round] over one shoulder & falling under the other arm, sometimes 3 or 4 of them looking like little books.
One reis had wht. [white] silk sleeves peeping out from under his torn sleeves of stuff.
From the deck I looked at the beautiful scene by moon light & was glad to go early to bed.

Looked out early & saw the moon fade & the sun rise on Phille [Phillae].
About 9.30 put up sail & moored by the island just in front of the Lotus which [went] had gone over early - behind them is a German boat, then comes the Goodriches - then McClellen & a little further and the German.
Soon had a pleasant visit from all the Brownes, decided not to go until afternoon.
About 2 P.M. another American vessel comes down & moors below.
The grove of Palms on the opposite shore is beautiful.
