There was a whirlwind of sand, could not see at all across the river moon quite obscured & sky full of clouds; but what would be certain forerunners of a heavy rain with us - here only brings a hot, dry wind & showers of sand.
We lost our 4 pet pigeons yesterday, & do not know whether they left us at the cat. [cataract], or when the men first made a great [noise?], or maybe the firing of Hama, & the Reis, & D's revolver when we were near Assouan frightened them away.
We breakfasted at Elephantine, having had coffee & a boiscuit at Mahatta.
The yellow sand of the desert is not nearly as brilliant here as in Nubia.
I did not realize the difference before.
5 PM. anchored near a low long sand bank - the Lotus just ahead.
D. says we would have been better where we were than here.
But the place he intended to remain he found full of mosquitoes, & the next place that was tried the water was too shallow.
7 P.M. a few drops of rain fell.
The sunset was very fine.
This evening the sky is covered with clouds giving a milky appearance to everything - at times the moon shining very brightly.
