Description: Jane Rooker Breeden, born in 1853, was the oldest daughter of James Rooker Smith and Sarah McCann Smith. The Smiths emigrated from England and settled in Philadelphia, eventually resettling in Arcola, Illinois. In 1883, Jane married James Knox Breeden, an attorney. In 1892, the Breeden's moved to South Dakota where they filed a homestead claim in Stanley County. After a short time in her new home, Jane became involved in the campaign for equal suffrage for women and became chair of the State Equal Suffrage Association. The Breedens eventually left their ranch and moved to Pierre, South Dakota. Jane held the office of "Perpetual Vice President" for the Dickens Club, a literary club established in Pierre, and also helped to establish the State Federal of Women's Clubs. This record contains correspondence related to the women's suffrage movement in South Dakota.
