Collection Description: Mabel Townsley French was the daughter of Samuel S. and Margaret Eliza (Leech) Townsley. They had five children: Mabel, John Boyd, Lucy Edna, Arthur, and Paul. Mabel Townsley was born May 30, 1877 in Brighton, Iowa at the home of her grandmother Delzell. Townsley attended the University of South Dakota from 1894-1899. She taught country school in Hartford, South Dakota from 1899 to 1900 and spent 1901 – January 1903 teaching in Keystone, SD. Townsley then became an English instructor at the University of South Dakota from 1906-1910. In 1908-1909 she also served as the University’s registrar. On September 3, 1910, Townsley married Dr. Harley Ellsworth French (1872-1961). French served as a USD professor of anatomy and bacteriology from 1906-1911. The couple had two children: Mary Margaret (Richard E.) Frank and Burton Townsley. Mabel Townsley French died in 1945.
