Seatlle, Wash. Sep 13/15 Hon. William Spry Governor of Utah. Your Excellency: From what I have read concerning the case of Joe Hill now under sentence of death in your state I am so thoroughly convinced that Utah is about to commit a judicial murder that I cannot refrain from protesting with all my might againt the execution of that sentence. A jury selected from a community whose minds had been systematically prejudiced day in and day out by newspaper articles cleverly framed for that express purpose, was simply incapable of rendering [?] and unbiased verdict and I am of the firm belief that had the prosecution been one half as zealous in learning the actual truth about the matter as they were determined to compass this man's death, he would to day be walking the streets a free man. There is abroad in this land to day a growing conviction in the minds of thousands

that a foul conspiracy exists to prevent strikes on the part of labor unions by preferring empty charges against every leader who has had the courage to engineer a strike and by means of [suborned?] courts and packed juries to railroad them to the penitentiary or the gallows; and it is difficult for anyone who has carefully followed the cais in question to escape the conviction that Joe Hill is a victim of just such a conspiracy. The flimsy evidence upon which his conviction was based surely warrants the exercise of Executive clemency and I now call upon you to at least commute his sentence to life imprisonment and thereby save the state of Utah from the everlasting disgrace of strangling this man to death only to discover later on that he had no connection whatever with the crime charged against him. Very respectfully [Gio?] Glass

L. GOTTSCHALK CARRIAGE, SIGN AND AUTOMOBILE PAINTER REAR OF COAKLEY'S BLACKSMITH SHOP

STOCKBRIDGE, MASS. Sept. 13th 1915

To the Governor of Utah.

Dear Sir

In the name of the Working Class of America I wish to register most solumn and emphatic protest against the execution of Joe Hill, sentenced to die in your state Oct. 1st. It is my firm belief that his conviction and sentence constitute a judicial murder and a crime against the whole working class. I respectfully submit that it is your duty and opportunity, as Chief Executive of Utah to use such power as is vested in your office to prevent the execution, if after full investigation you are satid-sfied that Hill was unjustly convicted.

Very Respecfully Yours,

Louis Gottschalk Stockbridge, Mass
