To the governer of Utah Your Hon, Dear Sir If the State of Utah takes the life of Joe Hill then in my opinion Utah will have commit murder. There was no justice in the facial methods of having his trial held in a community, where public sentement was so strong against him. It is because public sentiment was inflamed against him that he is about to be murded. It was that same public sentiment that lynched Frank in that infamous southern [/left-hand page]

[right-hand page] state. public sentiment through out this country of our's, now condones that infamous state for the [?] down to the most humble citizen. If Joe Hill is murdered on Oct 1st then Utah will become just as infamous as that southern state. Frank was murdered because he was a Jew. Hill is to be murdered because he is a union man. In the name of justice * [protist] this kill Respectfully Joseph W Kelley 93 High St Brockton Mass [/right-hand page]

Hon, Governor of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Sir: Having noticed in the newspapers that Joe Hill, a working class poet, and a conspicuous leader in the strike in that locality, lies in prison in the state of Utah, sentenced to death, to be executed on October 1st. The persecution of Joe Hill is a clear case of infamous injustice. He was bodly railroaded by an unfair trial in a community where public sentiment was inflamed against him because he had been a conspicuous leader of the strikes in that locality. Joe Hill is accused of robbery and murder, but the truth is that he is sentenced to be shot simply because he

2 dated to stand with his class in revolt and refused to cringe before the exploiters of the workingmen's toil. As a citizen of this State and the United States I protest against the execution of Joe Hill and consider such execution to be rank murder, and a blow at liberty and a crime against the working class of the United States. Therefore, I ask you to take all the steps to the capacity of your office to save the life of my brother workingman - Joe Hill.

Yours Respectfully, Jacob A. Kangas.

National Office: 634 South Michigan Avenue CHICAGO, ILL. September Fourteenth Nineten Fifteen. [/middle] Since there is a reasonable doubt as to the guilt of Joseph Hillstrom, we appeal for your Excellency's mercy. Should he ver be proven innocent after the execution took place, he could never again be resotred to life, so as to free the conscience of those who have permitted the taking of it.

We are opposed to the application of Captial Punishment in every instance, because it is not in keeping with the best dictates of our conscience and of common humanity, and because we have reason to believe it to be highly impractical.

We the undersigned members of the National Executive Board of the ANTI CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SOCIETY OF AMERICA, representing the will of our organization, respectfully pray your Excellency's clemency in behalf of Joseph Hillstrom.

May your pardonning power be exercised in the prevention of taking a life, never given by man, but can be protected only in some instances. It is indeed a privilege to have the opportunity of saving a life which at present rests in your honor's hands.

So may your hand be guided by the power of God whose will is "THOUS SHALD NOT KILL."

Respectfully yours, ANTI CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SOCIETY OF AMERICA By Executive Board :- Norman G Sorrowe Chairman Maurice B Kovnat Secretary
