26th so very unequal in numbers, retired at 10 o’clock on the night of the 26th with the utmost secrecy & precaution & took up a position one league in rear of Fort Calhos  I was on picket the night, & from the report of deserters the enemy were determined on attacking us at daylight  in the morn.g you may suppose I was rather in an anxious
