26th so very unequal in numbers, retired at 10 o’clock on the night of the 26th with the utmost secrecy & precaution & took up a position one league in rear of Fort Calhos  I was on picket the night, & from the report of deserters the enemy were determined on attacking us at daylight  in the morn.g you may suppose I was rather in an anxious
27th state of mind  at 11 o’clock our picket consisting of 200 men was ordered to the battery, & at 12 the whole army having decamped with the exception of the videts & our pickets, we marched after the Cavalry & L.t Div.n  the enemy drove in our videts at 2 o’clock & continued in full chase after us  we did not arrive with our pickets at the Div.n before 3 o’clock in the afternoon of the 27th, much fatigued as you may suppose  when shortly after the Enemy attacked us & attempted to force our
