Sir 13th Rapp.a June the 14th: 1750

I make no Doubt but that you have long ago
[he]ard of the Safe Arrivals of your Ships the Henry and
[Ev]erton in York and Rapp.a Rivers, by the former
my goods came to hand in good order, free from any
Damage and I think well Bought; I very readily agree
with you in Opinion that the Sales of my Tob.o by
[t]he Everton the last year are intolerable; espicially
[a]s I was fortunate enough to save the insurance, which
[r]uns away with the Price of Tob.o in War time, I am
heartily sorry that I have reason to find fault with
your management in the disposal of this Tob.o, which
I hope will never be in my Power hereafter; my
Surprise at this Acc.t is so much the greater, because
the Tob.o was made upon the Prime part of my Estate
and from its reputed good quality when inspected I had
the greatest expectations of an extraordinary Produce
As I have the greatest opinion of M.r Goor's knowledge
of Tob.o and from my short correspondance with
him, am intirely convinced of his Integrity: I shou'd
with the greatest reluctancy discontinue what I under
took with so much Pleasure; the last crop was so much
shorter than what was expected that many of the Ships
must return home without Tob.o; I am afraid neither
Thornton nor Shelley will get their Complement; I have
given Cap.t Thornton thirty Lhds; which I have endeavour'd
to Prize agreable to your Request; and therefore hope
you will not have the least reason for Complaint: From
the Prospect at Present it's thought there will not be twenty
thousand Lhds made in the Colony this year; I really
dont believe there will be anything like that Quantity
I would therefore advise you to send one Ship only to
Accommodate your Friends Tob.o in York and Rapp.a
and that a Small one; my Best Endeavours shall not be
wanting to serve you when ever opportunity serves I am Sir
To Your Humble[ ]rv.t
M.r Charles Goore Char.s Carter
