My Dears Came here yester-day to work among the marching column of Gen'l Burnside, & there to the Hd Quarters of Genl Meade—
You know, [ere?] this, doubtless that all the troops are getting into motion—The 9th corps came suddenly across the county from Annapolis & are now passing Fairfax Court House. Gen'l Lee is said to be falling back— Every thing indicates that the campaign is to be one of un-usual vigor, & we hope of success. The whole army is in the highest possible spirits—is now very strong—& all confidence

is [reposed?] in Gen'l Grant—But "the battle is not to the strong" There will doubless be baffling & trial until the country is fully ready for the final success—I am glad the ladies begin to think that costly foreign goods to be paid for in Butter & gold at double price— should be used far more spar-ingly—The Loyal League ladies of Washington—of his highest standing— will set the example.
Called on George & wife—both very happy in their new position. They have a room like yours & board at some distance in another family. They send love. At the [Putt's?] [Liver?] a few evenings since she took a violent cold but is better now, Mrs Marks is better & rides out daily—She expects to go to a Water [Cure?] this summer,

I suppose you are on the alert about these days in regard to mo-ving—Dont buy any thing more for the house if you can help it, I dont think we shall stay more than the year—perhaps not that—& then every thing is to be so costly, we shall have little or nothing to start with unless we draw again from our Savings Bank money. I have just had to give an order on Mr Hill for the payt of the S. B. mortage, Some clothes I must have for these are [but?]- -[cially?] dropping off—Have you the two young men for boarders? This, you know, will seem to be ne-cesary. You will be ready for me & to move the goods into a clean house about the 2d will you not? Dont start them un-til I come, My health is good
