[given?] vividly—give her my dear love & god's [help?]. Would that I could name the man for Pres. O Howard but I dont know him. Sorry that George declines—[for?] though not a brilliant man—he is, far better He is [through?] has [ashrindle?] judgement eminently practised—commands respect & confidence & fits into the niche of Howard's present need. [Chief?] [spoke?] as he is in the [lower?] [Mississippi?]—they can better spare him than Howard can.

[erk?] [unclear] I kept the track [slyon?] througout the war—& thence up to now—You speak of the "flagrant scandal" about the "Freedman's Bank" I have heard the [history?]—as far as you personally are con cerned—I have heard no whisper against you in [dignity?] & if I had, it would pass by me like the "idle wind"
