[in pen] Jan 31, 1880

Dear Mrs. Alvord:

Your letter from Denver containing an acocunt of Mr Alvords sickness and death, was received and read with melancholy interest and I have taken the liberty of reading that portion of it to many of your friends who expressed the warmest sympathy in your bereavement, and desired to know of his sickness.—The death of such a man, coming at a ripe age and finding him with the [harness?] on, always seems to me, not a defeat, but a triumph.

[sideways on left side] under his second trust—subject of course to you first. Please remember me to Mr & Mrs Cole & the boys and let me know of your movements so that I can communicate with you Thanking you for your expressions of confidence

Truly yours F. H. Smith

not to be dreaded but to be desired and prayed for.

I am glad my letter reached you in time for the check to be endorsed. It troubled me a good deal supposing it came too late and knowing that you would need money. I enclose statement of account and draft for $250. The balance which has been carried along as a loan until the next Farless interest became due, I will remit in my next monthly settlement.—Poor Terry has suspended his business operations as I have for a good while supposed he would sooner or later, in prison.—in default with his building association of which he was Secretary, over $25,000. The particular amount for which he was arrested was small and his friends would have procured bail, but finding he would be immediately rearrested by others, they concluded to let matters take their course.—The interest will be paid promptly by McGregor who expects to sell the property
