pride his revolver, a modern automatic action 6 shooted of large
calibre. After talking with us for a little while, he put his hand to
his ear and listened & then I heard for the first time, a few faint
notes of a song coming from far away and upon looking saw a few
faint figures, hardly to be distinguished from goats, slowly winding
their way along the slope of a small hill some half mile away. In
a few minutes our new friend took off his 'abâye & shoes saying he
would leave them with us while he went to water his goats at a
pool nearby. He then ran at an easy graceful pace in the direction
of the figures on the hill side, being concealled from their view by
by a slight rise of ground. Suddenly he stopped before getting to
their sky line and quickly took off his short coat which was blue
in color, turned it inside out - and put it on again and it was red.
Then he changed his Keffiyeh, and went toward them. After
talking with them some 10 mins., he changed his coat back to blue

disguised himself and stollen over to surprise her, in a spirit of
playfullness. It was such a beautiful lie, that I had to laugh but he
kept a perfectly straight face. After that Peter, ^closely followed by the Arab^ in rummaging in
one of the clusters of ruins found two donkeys in an old house
and was told by the young man that they were being kept there
by him for a friend. Peter came back to where our horses were
tied & got one or two of the servants to go with to investigate
further, but when he returned to the place with them, the donkeys
and man had disappeared. This cleared the atmosphere for it
