To the Council and House of Representatives of the Territory of Wisconsin in session. The undersigned Citizens of the Village of Racine in Racine County understanding that your Honorable bodies have been petitioned to enact a law authorising the opening of a channel to empty the waters of Musqequac Lake into Root River beg leave most respectfully but earnestly to Remonstrate against the passage of any such Law as not in any manner subserving the public good & as being highly detrimental to individual interest. The Natural outlet of said lake empties itself into Fox River near the flourishing village of Rochester in this county and upon said outlet there are several valuable water powers some of which are now improved & which would be entirely destroyed should the water from the lake be diverted as contemplates without any public advantage to compensate for so deplorable a sacrifice of private property. In short we deem it a project to benefit the few at the expense of many a project always reprehensible in a free Governments.
