along the Mexican border, the constant threat to attack our troops, Carranza ordering the U.S. to withdraw them, and if they persisted in moving farther South, East, or West they would attack them. But they persisted in remaining and in moving on altho the ostensible reason for their being there was to catch Villa, whom 20,000 troops failed to find and have not yet found him, although 20,000 troops have pursued him & his band. The Commanding Officer of that Divisoin ordered them (very rashly) to move on. They did in the face of the threat and the battle of Carranza followed. Then followed the demand for Wilson to intervene in Mexico - to declare War upon her by the U.S. regardless of the cost of life, money and munition. The National Guard was called out. (De Forest joined them when he was a school boy of 18 under my protest. He had to mobilize with the men, march thru the City in a Kahi suit and go to Camp Radios just below Ft. Myer & remain there nearly 3 weeks & be disciplined. They are now at New Orleans 500 of them on their way to Bisbee, Arizona. They will there to-

night and be located next the Red Cross Camp. I am watching their journey with intense interest, I offered to try to get him off, but he said "I do not want to get off." I know what I was doing when I signed the papers. That settled it! All of the boys wanted to fight. Weak and feeble as I am, I have been over to Camp Radio 3 times to see De Forest, and carry him fruits & candy, and clean towels & pocket handkerchiefs. Tommie Reid, his old bosom friend when they were at 619 F St. is with him. He is a sergeant and DeForest is a Corporal. The last time I went to see him which was 4th of July morning with 30,000 laboring men on the streets of Wash about to dedicate teh new labor temple on 9th St. He said to me "Mammie" I have something new to tell you!" I was married last night to Miss Lillian Carter who lives only 2 blocks from you. Sure enough when I got home in the Morning Herald, in a conspicuous paragraph was the words At St Pauls Episcopal Church by the Rev. Mr. Hall DeForest L. [Omis?] 25 to Miss Lillian Carter, 22.

He had to leave his young wife without staying even an hour to get back to his Reg. Which is the D.C. Nat. Guards. Signal Corps, (Mounted) He did not have an opportunity to see his young wife again. She is a beautiful young girl - tall and slender, with beautiful blue eyes & blonde curly hair. and very gracious. Is living with her mother & a step father whose name is Wiliamson & gave her a little reception last even'g. Last evening Friday July 7th she came to see me, with another lady.) dressed in her wedding clothes, and brought me her marriage Certificate & her wedding ring (a solitaire diamond) So you see my nose is out of joint & my last prop is gone. But I am glad he is married & maybe the trip will do him good, I do not think there will be any fighting except skirmishes on the border. I wrote Wilson that we still had a Treaty of Peace with Mexico, and that could not see any right or authority we had to keep an armed force in Mexico. I think he has since ordered the troops withdrawn but I got a great scare. The excitement now is to raise money for the soldiers families. It is called The Welfare Club. The Rotary Club, & the Commercial Club each appropriated $1000, & somebody 400,

I think you have had a hard and discourageing time & I have been powerless to help you, altho I would have been glad to have helped you. I have not rented your room yet not nor Dr Marys. She went away and would only pay me $3, altho she stayed over a month. She wanted the money to spend at the Federation in N.Y. which I have since learned was a very grand & fine affair with from 12000 to 14000 Delegates. I having from present have heard a description of it by about 1/2 to 2 prominent members who were there, and since that at the Suffrage Union a description of the Progressive Convention & the Suffrage Convention & the Republican Convention in Chicago & the Democratic Convention in St. Louis.

The Suffrage Convention seems to be making great gains, but not in marked accretions. Anna Shaw & Chapman Catt have interviewed Hughes.

Mrs. Humphreys did not pay me for your lamp, & so I did not let her have it & the woman did not come with the $1 for the book & I concluded that she sent it to you direct. Mrs. Rogers & Mrs Hamilton are still here & one Mrs Humphreys, & the latter is the only one who pays me rent & she in driblets. and a little woman in the basement who leaves next week. The $10 DeForest was paying me is stopped by his going into

the Army. The Ansen Sanders case is not settled yet. The colored woman Mildred who lived in the little Brick House with Mary went crazy last week, and had to be sent to the Asylum.

Bishop Harris Mrs. McIntosh's Brother, our Missionary Bishop who has worked 25 years in Japan & Corea was retired at the great Methodist Conference which met at Saratoga a month ago will visit his 2 sisters here Mrs. McIntosh & Mrs. Reid at preach at Metropolitan Church next Sunday where a great ovation will be given him. None of the books and parcels left in your room or the suitcase, or the books at the door have been called for since you left & no mail comes any more.

I have overlooked the matter of signing the rest of the Club cards, but will sign them & send them to you if you wish them.

I am reasonably well, and sleeping out of doors in the day time, but I am somewhat alarmed at that malady of yours which you call intercostal rheumatism. You must take care of yourself & your health as nobody will do it for you. Excuse this short note & as ever. Yours B.A. Lockwood.
