Why should she have done so, since he never expressed any opinion on the question, as Republics did not exist in his day.

I will take the liberty of suggesting names for your consideration: Mrs. Eliza Hendricks (widow of the late vice president) of your own city has shown such excellent executive ability in the management of the Woman's Prison of Indianapolis, that if she would accept the appointment she would certainly perform the duties satisfactorily
