would be entirely unjustifiable in ordinary cases. Before commencing the excavation for a Light House, the augur (???) should in all cases develope in advance the proper distance to be excavated. Where the rock under the Light House site is much inclined to the horizon, great care must be wed (???) in the foundation and in no case should part of the area of the bottom of the pit be left in rock and the other part in earth. When rock developes itself within a short distance , say it or 8 feet of the surface, the whole area must be carried down to rock, else the greater compression on one side than the other would incline the tower.
The foregoing in in relation to the formation at Cape Foulweather.
