Office of the Light House Engineer Thirteenth District Portland, Oregon August 5, 1871???

Dear Admiral W.B. Shubick Chairman Light House Board, Washington, D.C.

Sir:

I have the honor to inclose for approval - Duplicate Contracts - made for full and final completion of Light House at Yaquina Bay, Oregon.

Contracts dated June 9, 1871 - made with Ben Simpson - to furnish all labor and work, and transportation of Lens, Lantern, etc. from San Francisco to Yaquina Bay.

Contracts dated June 16, 1871, made with Joseph Bien - to fit together Lantern, Iron work, lens, etc. and deliver same to vessel bound for Yaquina Bay, Oregon, for the sum of $100 U.S. Gold Coin.

These contracts for Light House at Yaquina were made in duplicate - one copy given to

contractor and being made long before (I) received the instructions contained in letter from L.H. Board of July 20, 1871 with blank forms. Do not correspond with those instructions that were made in accordance with the best information I could obtain from the L.H. Clerk - 12th District.

In accordance with letter from L.H. board of July 20, I have the honor to inclose for approval the only copy in my office of contract with C.F. Brown for building Light Keepers dwelling at Cape Disappointment, Wash Ty, on which contract I have copied the approvals of the L.H. Board made on the original contract sent them June 22, 1871 and I respectfully request that this copy be returned to me. (last 7 words underlined).

Rear Admiral W.B. Shubrick Chairman Light House board, Washington, D.C.

Sir:

I have the honor to transmit a copy of my letter dated August 5 mailed from this office same date inclosing for approval duplicate contracts for full and final completion of Light House at Yaquina Bay, Oregon. Also one copy of contract with C.F. Brown for building L.K. dwelling at Cape Disappointment, Wash. Ter.

The receipt of this letter has never been acknowledged and I am in doubt whether it has reached the L.H. Board. I stated in that letter the copies of contracts sent were the last in this office and if they were lost in the mail. I would respectfully request copies of the contracts in the Office of the L.H. Board.
