IV. 4. To the fourth Cross Intg. he says:
Ans. There is not, within my knowledge, any particular
or special custom in Pickens County, which dif-

to the hiring of negroes.

V. 5. To the fifth Cross Int'g he says:
Ans. - I was not present when the said supposed
notes mentioned in this fifth Cross Interrogatory were exe-
cuted. I know nothing about these notes, or the consid-
eration for which they were given. I know nothing of
the amount of the notes.

VI. 6. To the sixth Cross Int.g. he says:-
Ans- I have not stated that certain negroes have
ever been in possession of Daniel Turnipseed. I do not
know said negroes to be the same now in controversy, but
I suppose them to be the same. I was not present when they
were in possession of Daniel Turnipseed, if they ever
were.

VII. 7. To the seventh Cross Intg he says:-
Ans- I did not state in my answer to said second
Interrogatory that I had examined the slaves named
in said Interrogatory. I know no more about said
