Dennis Franklin was born in London, England, on the 4th November 1914. He received his education at the Aristotle Technical School where he gained his proficiency certificate. After leaving school in 1929 he came out to New Zealand to make his home in this country. His sports were motor cycle racing, cricket and shooting. His civilian occupation was that of a Tailor's cutter and he was so employed by Messrs. Schneideman and Son of Wellington when in March 1942 he applied for war service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Flight Sergeant Franklin was enlisted at R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Waipapakauri on the 6th December, 1942, and was employed on aerodrome defence duties while awaiting training for aircrew. During March and April, 1943, he performed similar duties at R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Ohakea, and Seagrove until posting on the 29th April to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua. He was posted on the 26th June, 1943 to No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School, Harewood, for elementary flying training, and on the 30th August 1943, he was posted to No. 1 Service Flying Training School, Wigram, where on the 19th November, 1943 he was awarded his flying badge. On the 25th December, 1943 he was promoted to Sergeant. He was promoted to Flight Sergeant on the 2nd June, 1944. Meanwhile, on the 27th February 1944, he had embarked to proceed to the United Kingdom.

Flight Sergeant Franklin arrived at No. 12 Personnel Reception Centre, Brighton, on the 19th April, 1944, and was posted on the 16th June, 1944, to No. 24 Elementary Flying Training School, Sealand, Cheshire. He was posted on the 26th February, 1945 to No. 15 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, Babdown Farm, Gloucestershire. On the 28th March, 1945 he was attached to No. 1532 Beam Approach Training Flight, also at Babdown Farm, with with flight he carried out training in blind flying. On the conclusion of this course,
