Flight Sergeant Franklin resumed his training with No. 15 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit.

On the morning of the 9th April, 1945, Flight Sergeant Franklin was carrying out a training flight in an Oxford Aircraft, and he was coming into land when the aerodrome was suddenly obscured by fog and the aircraft overshot, the starboard wing striking the ground. Flight Sergeant Franklin received serious injuries and was admitted to the R.A.F. Hospital at Innsworth, where he later passed away at 11.20 a.m. the same day. He was buried on the 13th April, 1945, at the Haycombe Cemetery, Bath, Somerset.
