1840 June 10th My Wife Died with Consumption, Funeral Preached the 11th from 14th Chpt & 13 Verse Revelations by Elder G. Dickinson - On the 29th June 1840 My wifes Sister Susanna D Mills & her Husband Andrew L Mills came out to Pttsya but too late to see her sister, stayed 5 days & set out for Louisa her Fathers where they now live & have done ever since they were married -

=Very Wet Summer 1840 - & spring Wheat sorry oats good corn promising etc etc.

= On the 1st day of april 1842 JW Graves was taken with Rheumatism & did not get well till Harvest & indeed was not well then, but in the Harvest field on 25th June 1842 where they were cutting of wheat & on Saturday 25th had a grum =bling toothache most all day at night my Jaw Prevented me & my wife from sleeping one wink next morning 26th I got Mr Neal to draw my tooth & I was then taken with a rising under my Jaw & on my throat which was near brot me near my grave & its now 26th day of July & I believe it will rise again. May God have mercy upon me & us, JW Grave26th July 1842

Wednesday 25th May 1836. It commenced raining & continued on cloudy & raining More or less and on the 6th day of June being Monday it commenced raining very hard and that night Such a rain fell as never has been Known in this part of the Country Mr Millers Mill Saw Mill & Cotton machine & several other houses washed away one colt drowned, Doct Whites [unclear] & and the under work of his Mill Some washed away so that he cant grind meal Whiteheads Mill dam broke, Gower Keatts Mill house & all gone - Degarritts all gone, Patricks, shanks, gone - all I have yet heard from Banister Brid[g]e gone Stinking river Bridge gone -

1837 February the first & last Jany is fine & warm we have sewed 3 plant Beds Two on my Spring branch & one John’s spring branch —

Tuesday 7th February 1837 - = 1839 July 13th It is said that powdered allum say 1 Table Spoon full will purify a Hhd of water& make the water good to Drink - to a Tub full of 4 Galls 1 Tea Spoon full will purify the water & make it goodNews paper Herald

1842 Novr 30th Hailed nearly all night the 29th & till nearly 12 Oclock this 30th Novr 1842 about shew [shoe] Deep - = myself & Lady went to Lynchg in this month,-

Farewell my Dearest Father wherever you do Lie, ye little think Your Daughter is now condemned to die - In Heaven amoungst the angels I hope my soul will dwell, so now my Dearest father I bid you Twice farewell, soon as these words were spoken in come the man of Death, and Kindled up the fire to stop this Virgins Breath, she cast her eyes to Heaven Lord Jesus she did call, Receive my soul to glory before thy face to fall

= There has been but little rain here since 1st June 1838 its now augt 14th I don’t think the ground has been wet more than one Inch this summer & such an indifferent prospect for a crop of Corn & Tobacco never was Known about here

September 4th 1838 no Rain JWGraves yet here Some little showers passed about on the last of August but none here to wet the ground since the first of June for this morning September 4th 1838 There is frost but none to hurt Tobacco much. JW Graves nights very cool since the 1st June it has generally been extremely hot but night & day untill lately nights are cool

3 & 4th Sept 1838 frost & I discover my Tobacco smartly injured JW Graves

[written on top of previous text vertically:] no rain till 19th Sept 1838 began 20 minutes before 3 Oclock in morning & Rained till Breakfast hard
