1872 May 31st Nearly finished Beding & Hilling lot yesterday finishing this morning, then we are going to Plowing corn in field above Granary at shed upper end & weeding & Sam gone in his above road to Neals Plowing & Weeding, clear & quite cool Planting Simblings Potatoe Slips

June 1st Weeding & Plowing corn sent Ben to Yates Mill 4 Bus. corn for meal etc Bus. wheat for flour ½ Bbl corn for Sam for meal, very cool & getting dry Halled Leaves & put in Stables Tommy & Sam both done above Granary & road Ben got back from Mill after 12 oclock Tom plowed Corn by Blk Smith shop & in Garden etc etc Cloudy & cool my wife gone to Mr Lewis's Andrew took his Holliday to day & Lewis & Ben Mr S Mattherly fixed Side wipe this evening & has been to corn field Since Dinner

June 2nd Rained a little most all day ground tolerable wet. I went to Sunday school not many met

3rd drawing Tobacco plants will plant Lot first cloudy & like for rain this morning most done planting our Lot & finished planting our flat land on camp & John's Branches expect to replant fresh ground in morning still cloudy & cool, Robert Tucker helped us plant tobacco to day Rained some to day & cloudy lent Edmond ½ Inch auger & 1 Weeding Hoe

4th Raining this morning Put up rails on fence by corn till Breakfast then rained harder & We Went to Striping Tobacco & it rained till near 12 oclock then cleared off, Ben went after flour at Yates Balance replanted fresh ground, then striping Tobacco again fine weather now

5. putting up rails on lot by corn House Shearing sheep Halled up stack fodder weeding & Harrowing corn clear morning Finished planting & replanting Tobacco & Finished striping my Tobacco & began on Sams

6 Weeding corn above Granary Mattherly & Andrew Tom Harrowing corn in fresh field, cloudy putting up rails this morning around corn field

1872 June 7th Plowing & weeding corn this day

8 Shearing Sheep to day Jacob & wife here -- Plowing & weeding corn this day Finished weeding corn in fesh ground above Granary. Planted Peas weeding corn in fresh field.

9th. Let Mr Mattherly have my cart & steers to go to mill nearly 1 days work due me for that Andrew Wyatt chopping in corn to day I went to S S Meeting Mr Booker & Mr Wood there to day. Booker preached in morning

10 Sacrament Administered by Bro. Booker & Wood Wood Preached at 4 oclock Mott & Sunday yesterday her children down here & Doron come with them Friday. --- Mr Matherly here this morning cloudy weeding & Plowing corn till 12 oclock it then rained & we went to Replanting Tobacco & our lot was nearly all missing balance was not much missing ~ finished replanting at about 9 oclock

11th thining corn where we have not worked Finished planting Pea Patch Saturday

12th clear day fixing up & working corn where we Plowed yesterday Mr. Mattherly cutting clover Hay 2 or 3 Hours for Horses Sam & his Gang weeding corn Sent Tom Talbot to Primas shop with my waggon Body to shop to put on old Irons which he is to Iron for $5 agreeable to bargain sent all the old Irons in a basket Bro Wood stayed here again Monday night

13th. Me & Andrew weeding corn in morning Halled up clover Hay to day. Tommy got over once to day or corn Peas etc Harrowing corn above Bars with Side wipe Sam & all weeding corn Began to Cut wheat by Granary to day Mr. Mattherly not here to day

14th Tommy Harrowing with Side wipe corn down next to Bars above plant Bed all the Balance will weed & chop corn to day laying by Irish Potatoes

14th June 1872 I expect to go shop Beach tree John R Whiteheads Jerrys & Fannie Moses to day windy & cool this morning they are weeding corn Sam Plowing fresh ground & laying by --

15 Mattherly Tommy Andrew & Lewis weeding corn & they are trying to finish this evening but did not finish,

16 I went to Sunday school

17th weeding corn, Sam Grinding Blades to cut wheat. cloudy & like for rain, took down our fine Tobacco this morning & put it in 2 Boxes in old prize Barn

17th Cutting wheat from ½ after 9 oclock all day weeding corn before I went to Mount Airy to get my mail

18 finished weeding corn then Plowed awhile before 12 oclock, cut wheat in lot 3 hours making 1 day & then Plowing again laying by corn in field above Granary Tommy begun to Side corn in field above Granary laying by rained a little this evening wed a little Tobacco in fresh ground after rain,

19 Cutting a little wheat at 12 oclock laying by corn Tommy above Granary & Sam at Mountain Mattherly not here Since the 18th June cool nights Hot days

20th Laying by corn Mattherly not here cutting wheat out Ben & Lewis weeding down Tobacco in fresh ground, I am going to see Wm Tucker about Carr[y]ing my Tobacco down to Lynchg & to Shop to day

21st laying by corn Tommy & Mr Mattherly Bill Plowing Andrew chopping after plows in corn Ben & Lewis weeding Sam lay by & so is Tommy & Mattherly, Bees swarmed to day while I was gone sewed Whanns Fertilizer on corn by Bars about 20 Rows in corn & Plowed it in

22 Working & weeding down fresh ground Mr Mattherly gone with my cart & steers to move his Father, Salley & her chldren came down this day We striped some Tobacco Sam & his B[page corner turned] Andrew & Tommy weeding fresh ground & done 70 R[ows]

22nd June 1872 finished 70 Rows before 5 oclock

23 I went to Sunday School

24 Rained last night & we loaded Wm Tucker with Tobacco & went to replanting & did not get done till nearly 12 oclock Tuesday I Started to Lynchg this evening Rained again

25 Rained last night Plowing little & done but little

26th Cutting wheat & finished

27 Working on Branch weeding Tobacco - Tommy Plowing --

28 - Mattherly & Tommy Laying by corn Andrew weeding Tobacco on Branch did not get done

29th Andrew finished in a manner Sent home to P.O. Started 8 oclock & he Stayed till 12 or after Laying by Corn Mattherly lost nearly ½ this day come to work little before 12 oclock I took the Boys & went to Halling up wheat Hauled up Lot that by Sams House & put in House

30th I went to Sunday School got back about 1 Ocl Monday 1st July Laying by corn Andrew working Pea Patch & Choping in corn

July 2nd Laying by corn choping in corn tremendous Hot & dry weather Bill Plowing Turned 7 of my Cattle by new prize Barn including Milly thats got a calf dolley with Bill on Bull & Lindy because I am afraid in the woods Pasture next to Woodings they will die

3rd Laying by corn & expect to finish laying by to day & Hauling up wheat making Bridge across Ditches on Camp Branch

4th Weeding down Tobacco this evening Tommy & Andrew Wyatt went to Sunday School Celebration at Strait Stone I went too Large congregation all passed off Peaceably Brother wood was there Sam finished Plowing & weeding down lot Tobacco Mr Mattherly lost ½ this day.

1872 July 5. I went to Shop & Mr Whiteheads Tommy finished Harrowing Lot & then worked with [Ho?] from 12 oclock till night Sam done Plowing his fresh & we have not begun Mattherly lost this day cutting oats at Thomas Owens 6th We will cut Oats here to day Mr Mattherly here cutting oats, cutting all day 7 Cloudy & foggy this morning quite warm 8 Finished cutting Oats here a little after 12 oclock. Finished weeding our Lot Hired Francis some to day to weed out Lot 9th Sam & his gang hilling up his fresh ground Tobacco Tom Plowed Our sweet Potatoes this morning We have put down machine, Tom Plowing fresh ground Tobacco to day - 10 Thrashed my wheat & some for Jacob Graves to day & got done by 12 oclock & machine gone to Doct [Haley] where Thomas Owen lives to thrash tomorrow Tom Plowing fresh ground Tobacco, Ben & [Lewis] choping corn Andrew Hilling up Fresh ground Tobacco - - very Hot & dry. Jacob Graves help machine wheat sent Charles - 11th Thrashed at Doct Haleys to day Sent our folks there & [mules] got done & carried machine to Mrs Smiths 12th sent Ben to Millers 3 Bus old wheat for me for flour 2 Bushels Corn for me for meal & 2 Bushels wheat for Sam to eat I let him have of my old wheat [and] part of his he makes this year Plowing & working Tobacco, Tom [Lane] cutting Grass this morning for me Ben Carried 2 Bus wheat to Yates flour for him to eat in part of what he gets of what we make this year 13th I went to meeting. We have got Bro P M [Reeves] as our Pastor till next Christmas. Tom finished Plowing Tobacco on Branch about 3 oclock Hilling up Tobacco Ben went to mill at Yates flour, for Sam 14th Mr Reeves Preached at S first time this day & will continue till X next
