marched all day till an hour
ago. Mr Rice and I got a second breakfast
at 10 at the summit (Mt. St. Helena)
it was fine. The ride was very tiresome
and dusty but the scenery was grand
This is a very pretty valley and the vineyards
are very pretty. it is pretty warm. I am
looking for the mail and maybe my
trunk from Calistoga where the ambulance
went an hour ago.

41/2 PM

The ambulance has just brought
three letters — two from mother and
one from Susie I have read them all
eagerly. My trunk did not come
and nobody knows where it is. I
am sick at heart at prospect of passing
through this valley as I am. I kept up
till here thinking I would surely get
it and it did not matter so much
in a rough country but here everything
is thickly settled and we shall have
lots of visitors and I am a disgrace
to the Battery. I can't tell how long
it will be, the Captain is so changable [changeable],
I may be home in 3 or 4 days and maybe
not for two weeks. I shall write
immediately to the Quartermaster at
S. F. San Francisco it is his business to hunt it up

Goodbye till tomorrow and love to Father
Taylor & Susie, Your loving son
