Newlove enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps in early 1918, and trained at Mare Island, California. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division (5th Regiment, 17th Company) and fought on the Western Front in France. Dear mother:

This being Sunday and nothing to do so will write you another letter.

Read some old mail last night. Two from you, two from Ida, two from Wilfred and one from Aunt May. One of your letters was written from Martinez.

They dated back as far as July. One of the boys said fifty-one letters at one time which was all old mail. Have been receiving your letters pretty regular

of late. Sure receive bucco from Wilfred & Aunt Nell. Never did receive any letter from Fred nor haven't got but one from Ray. There is still snow on the ground and it is getting colder all the time. Went a football game yesterday between our company team and the 66th Co. of the same Battallion. The teams were very evenly matched & it ended in a 0 to 0 score.

Some gobs were here the other day taking movies of us. We lined up in battle formation just as if we were going over the top & they took movies of us going over so you might see them in the movies at home some day. We were issued a half pound box of candy today & sure enjoyed it. We are supposed to get a lb every ten days but this is the first time we have got it. We have a menu posted up on the Bulletin board so we can tell just what we are going to have every meal. The menu for breakfast was Rice,

Niederbrietbach, Germany. Feb. 9, 1919.

Dear Dad: -

I thought I would write you a letter this time instead of mama. Rec'd a letter from her and Ida a few days ago & answered Ida's already.

It sure has been cold here the last few days. Was on Battallion Guard Thursday night and believe me one sure had to move to keep warm. The creek that runs through the town was frozen stiff. Tell Ray it is warm in Paso Robles besides what it is here. It has snowed

snowed quite a bit here lately. The Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin Roosevelt was here the other day looking us Marines over. Nearly froze waiting on the review to come off. They took movies of the parade so you may see them at Tanners Theater about ten years from now. Can't say that I exactly like this country. Its too hilly to suit me. Of course there are many pretty places but it don't come up to the U.S. I sent some postal cards home the other day of different places & hope you get them.

Our company football team played the 66th Co. yesterday & walked away with the game 15 to 0. Our divisional team the 2nd trimed the 1st Division also.

Both teams had some old college stars so it was a very good game & we won 6-0. How does every thing look over at the ranch. Hope Ray has a better crop than he did last year.

How did your bean crop turn out? There are five or six California boys in the same Platoon that I am in. One of the boys whose name is Thomas
