ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection includes 49 letters and postcards written by Albert W. Newlove to his parents in Arroyo Grande, California. In his letters, Newlove describes military life, sailing to Europe, the French countryside, his eagerness for battle, and observations of German prisoners. Newlove enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps in early 1918, and trained at Mare Island, California. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division (5th Regiment, 17th Company) and fought on the Western Front in France. In October 1918, Newlove was stricken with influenza and recuperated in a hospital near Bordeaux. Upon return to duty he was assigned to serve in the Army of Occupation stationed in the vicinity of Neuwied, Germany. Once discharged Newlove returned to San Luis Obispo County.

it is quit a city itself. Am back at my old trade again now. Shot on the range today and did pretty well except on the 500 yd. I fell down. Made 48 points out of a fifty on the 300 yd range. Two below a possible. We shoot for records later on. This is only a preliminary now. Rec'd of bunch of mail from you folks on my return from Aix. A couple from you, one from Dad, several from Ada and some from the Dexters.

So I have lots of letters to answer now. Well this is all I can think of so good-bye. Love to you all.

Dear mother

Your letter written on the 19th of april was received several days ago. Also rec'd one from Ida written a few days later. Our company has moved out of Niederbreitbach to this burg Kurtscheid. It is about five kilometers from Need a brick bat upon about the highest spot around here. We releived a company of the 32nd Division that was staying here. They are on their way back to the states by now I guess. We had considerable cold weather and snow here for awhile but the last week it has been real warm. Every thing is sure green and pretty now. All the fruit trees are bloomed out. Wish you were here to see the country

I took a trip down the Rhine about a week ago and it was well worth taking. Lots of beautiful scenery all along and many old castles. I sent you a book of the different places we passed the day I was on the trip so you had ought to get it before long. Tell Ida that I don't believe I sent any letter with the song.

We are billeted with the German people here instead of being in barracks. Two other boys and myself are staying together in with some square heads. We are fixed up very comfortable and the Fraulines do our washing. They will do most anything for you. Don't think we will build barracks here as I don't believe we will stay over in this country much

longer. The latest dope we have is that the 2nd Div. leaves here some time next month for the U.S.A. Heres hoping its straight dope as I am perfectly willing to leave this country any time they give us the word to shove. Give my regards to Scratch & tell him I may see him before long also to Ivan & Guy.

We start in to shoot on the range again tomorrow and after several days practice we shoot for records. Have to get up an hour earlier in the morning as we have to hike down to Niederbreitbach to the range. Got a nice long letter from Aunt Laura today & she said they had a car now. Got the papers and was glad to get them. Another boy right next door from me gets a bundle

quite often. He lives in Oakland.

Would like to have a kodak and I sure could get some funny pictures of these people. I don't see how they exist they are so far behind in everything. Hardly ever see a horse. They do all their farming with milk cows. Some of them have steers though but most of them use a couple of dinky looking cows. The Fraus do most of the work. I could do more work in one day than they can in a month. Well call to quarters has blown so guess I had better close. Love to everyone. Your loving son,
