9th Nevada Lottery Knocked Out in Senate

Thursday Feb 14

Clear warm and pleasant -- thawy and springlike -- sleighing much damaged -- The lottery bill came up at 2 PM in the Senate -- Senate Concurrent Resolution No 11 -- providing for organization and regulation of a lottery in this State -- passed at last session 2 yrs ago and laid over under the Constitution for ratification by this Legislature, which in case of ratification would have to provide for election for the submitting it to a vote of the people, whether to have a lottery or no lottery -- But this Senate by a vote of 10 to 3, 2 absent declared against such ratification, and therefore the lottery scheme falls dead and defeated in the Senate, with no chance for redemption in the Assembly -- Evening I visited Tim Dempsey and it being St Valentine's Day took a big orange to each of his 2 daughters, Pearlie and Nellie by way of valentines -- Bed 12 -- still clear & thawy -- Tim Dempsey is recovering from his recent severe illness and will soon be out and at work --
