Wednesday 16th May [1883]

In the morning Harry got the
water & washing tub ready for
me down at the well the place
the Black boy washes all the
clothes, & I washed & boiled
all our things. I was busy
there till dinner time. Harry
& Mr. Bowly [Mr. Bowley] went out to try
& get some turkeys for tea, but
they came back at 11 without
having had a shot at one.
They have some splendid
water-melons here, & they are a
great treat, after having had
no fruit for so long. There is
a very nice vegetable garden,
but the season for vegetables
is only just commencing up
in this part of the world, the
summer being too hot, so we
have had none. There is a
peculiar thing up here which
I have never heard of before &
that is the water supply. This
Station is full of the native
springs, & there are 3 or 4 wells
entirely supplied by these springs.
The earth is perfectly dry &
it is astonishing where the
beautiful clear water comes from.
