quinine tablet tomorrow. Attended choir prac-
tise [practice] for the 1st time Thurs. eve. I know I'm going to be
bored by the p.m. as it is all in B.

July 22, 1922 – Saturday
Worked in my room all morn.; then had early break.
with Miss P. & went with her to the Woman's meeting; it
was across the King's bridges to the west, a part of the
town I'd never been in before, past a lot of the old
royal tombs & cemeteries. Returning stopped at the
press for an envelope & the p.o. for the m.o., but
being Sat. it was closed at noon – worse luck – for
that means I have to go down again on Mon. Got
some Amer. mail – Y.C., L.D., Asia, – no I.J.'s; letters
from Frances Herring, Frances J. M.H, who has been in
the hosp. again, Belle, who has sent my shoes, Mr [?]
& Dr. Kelly, who is already at Maymyo, Saya Ah Sou,
& later a bill from the rooms for "The Burman".
Have never heard from the press about my acct
& do wish I would as I need money – a chronic
state these days. Went off to Mrs. H's alone this aft.
as I couldn't find any one; knew Miss P. wasn't
going as she brought me the little toy dog to take
the baby, whose first birthday it was. I took him
the little celluloid doll I got at the S.P.G. school
Christmas; Mrs. E. gave him a towel, Mrs. G enough
brown crepe for two rompers; Mr. G a Japanese
made rocking toy – like my own – Ma I. T. a pr. of pants,
the G.G's a pink silk longyi, the Hoods, a small
book; he had a lovely birthday cake with white
icing, pink rosebuds, & one candle. There were
tomato, chicken & peanut butter sandwiches; de-
licious [delicious] candy, & several kinds of cake all home-
made [homemade]. There was a Com. meet. afterwards a-

bout [about] 16 present, in regard to the meetings which
begin tomorrw, Mr & Mrs. T having arrived according
to schedule early this a.m.

July 23, 1922 – Sunday
A busy day, altho Dr. T. conducted the S.S.
hr. so I did not have to teach my class. Mrs. E went off
in the gharry, which she insisted on sending back
for me, altho I told her I had no money & preferred
to walk, so then I had the humiliation of going to
her in the Ch. to get the 4 a. to pay him – as it was a
1st class one; she further loaned me 2 a. for ch; I
had put 1a. in the S.S. collection which leaves me
2 pice! About 200 Karen soldiers came to the ser-
vice [service], a stirring sight, & I thought perhaps Dr T.
would preach in K., but he didn't; they are leaving
Tues. for Ranoon [Rangoon] & Thurs. for Singapore for two
yrs. service there; they have recently returned from
Egypt. After break. I undressed & read lying on my
bed, Sat's Gazette, the last Y.C., & finished "Plain Tales
from the Hills", which I'd begun at Myktila [Meiktila] & did
not get thru, so borrowed this from Dr. McC. Had the
Geog., & Miss Slattery's book to begin next when Ma
Thin M. arrived with 3 empty boxes, & several back
nos. of the Y.C. & C.E. she had gotten from the various
teachers to whom I had loaned them, & suggested
that we read some in John, in B. of course, which
I did for about an hr., still on the 1st ch. Then a hustle
to get down to see (Mrs.) Dr. Sheldon, who was return-
ing [returning] our call; early dinner & to ch. in Dr McC's tent this
time, he having come over yes. to put it up, & re-
maining [remaining] over today for the opening of the meeting.
Some one threw a clod in the middle of the service.
Had a bath before bed – which always wakes me
