September 22, 1922 – Friday
Went over to begin on II S. orals but they are having
B. & the time taken up for the day, so will have to
wait till next wk. Mrs. E. didn't go over to ch. as she
had a lot of Ref. Com. mail to look over, so I had
the bag to hold C. Events as usual. Then, as there was a 2/2
Eng. paper on hand, the exams. began right after
instead of 10 as usual; she said it would only take
5 min. but it took 15, because of course they all had
to go out to the different bldgs. to get their writing
material, etc., as they were not prepared expect-
ing [expecting] to commence it later. Then I helped Mrs.
E. get the guest room ready; hung 3 pictures, put
out towels, sheets, pillowslips, helped make the bed,
put on covers she had brought, & supplied one
small one myself; took in 3 Geog. Mags, & several
ornaments to make it look more homelike. Went
to the train at the regular time, but it was 3 hrs. late;
Straightened pictures for awhile; some money came
by telegraph for May, so took over for Mrs. E. to sign, &
found her buried in more ref. com matter, she
having read over 50 pp. since break. of the new
lot that came just after she'd gotten off the bunch
she worked on all a.m. Took the money over to
May & then left for the station only to find the
train another hr & 1/2 later; returned & was just
stripped ready for my bath, when they arrived so
hurried into my old kimona & hurried out to
speak to them – much to Mrs. E's disgust at my
undressed condition; she tried to hurry us
back, but I refused to be budged in spite of some
of her usual unkind remarks. Some vic. music

after dinner & then bed; Miss R. & I going previously
to prayer meet. where she made a brief talk & told the story of
the rich young ruler.

September 23, 1922 – Saturday
The Misses R. did not care for a regular break., preferring
to sleep to eat; after hearing them up I went in to see if
they were ready to go down, but they weren't quite, so I
came back to do a few more things in my room; in
the meantime Mrs. E. came & took them down, & I
followed almost immediately. They had tea, toast, but-
ter [butter] & jelly; while after making some toast – after Mrs. E.
had tried her hand, she left, while I sat down and ate
also. Mrs. H. came while we were still at the table, where
we talked for a few mintues – till 9 – & then they went
over to the G.G., while I made another trip to my room
following soon after, the girls were by this time hav-
ing [having] games, which they seemed to very much enjoy –
I would think they would as they seem to have so little
in their lives. Rosamond, the Y.W.C.A worker being
quite good at these things. She later showed them some
photos of other guides, and told them – showing them at the
same time – of the proficiency badges; & then presented
as many as she had pins for – there were not enough
to go around, with their emblem. Then break., after
which they wrote letters & rested, while I worked in my
room; got up soiled clothes, bathed, dressed, & got out
several things for the girls to use tomorrow & then to
Mrs. H's to tea – I was not invited, so realized I was butting
in but they insisted on my going; after remaining there
an hr. we were off to the p.o. where K. had letters to mail
& I got my package off to Miss C., having to pay letter
postage, as the parcel window closes at 3 p.m., so it
cost a rupee more to send them than the things
themselves! Thence to the palace where we spent an
hr. & a half, going to the model, grottoes, etc., where I had
not been before. Then back again when they took the
bluebirds & I took the S.S. class for a practise. Dinner
