1858 May 12 Very cool & Windy, wind from East wind blew hard all night, Hilling on Johns Branch & trying to finished there this Lugs& Picked Plant Bedsfinished I am going to allen Scruggs to get him If I can to help Jas B Faris prize Tobacco,

13th Jordan coltering new ground,- began to colter & Hill Second years ground at Mountain this morning Little fixing his machine to get shingles,- fixing another colter this morning - Picked Plant Beds.

14th Jordan coltering new ground balance Hilling at fresh ground & cutting them off Henry went with waggon up to Cedar Hill to hall Logs out of new ground halled 9 to Worshams & left 4 or 5 to Hall yet, we have finished planting greens in Garden,- Hester ranaway at Jacobs halling Logs with Jim but did not thank the Lord hurt any thing much, worsham is to saw the Logs into weather boarding Square edged Plank & slats to put smoke house 3 or 4 Inches wide & ¾ think [thick] to Keep out rats after its daubed the Plank we want to cover a shelter for waggon Carrd 2 Turns 4 Bus. Corn to worsham & got itfor meal

15 Hilling & Coltering at mountain fresh ground Jordan coltering new ground

16th Sunday School Commenced this day

17th I went to Court, took down all our Second rate Tobacco this morning & Pack it ready for prizing & cooped the Lugs ready to carry away- Sold Faris’s to anderson for $8 around etc to be delivd soon as possible went to Coltering & Hilling in evening

18th waggon & cart Halling out manure Balance Hilling at mountain, Sandy with Henry & Jordan Halling out manure — Very hard rain in evening & after it we [drea?] Tobacco Plants

1858 June 7th Cloudy & like for Rain, foggy — — 8th Thined corn last evening plowing corn Jordan halled 2 Loads of wood 2 Loads leaves for & 1 stack Blade fodder & Turned out steers in Pasture – This morning weeding corn by malissas House Plowing Henry Coltering cotton & Irish Potatoes & Greens in Garden, I went to Pigs Jacobs & Jno Shields & Jas Shields to make arrangements to Carry Faris Tobacco to anderson & am to give scruggs & shields $2.50 a Load-, Plowing & weeding corn at this

9th time put out some good Tobacco to sun Nannie gone to Mrs Hunts, Sent Jordan to dig grave at Mr Neals for Robys child to day - took in Tobacco at night

10th Henry Coltering corn Jordan Sandy & claiborne throwing Dirt from corn balance weeding after Henry cloudy this morning

11th Plowing & weeding corn, I went to Riceville to Carry Faris Tobacco & delivered to anderson 2600 & some pounds as Recd [sh?] @8$ —

12, This morning drawing plants & replanting till it rained It began to rain about 7 or 8 oclock & Rained tremendous hard 2 or 3 hours they finished replanting Johnss Branch, in morning & finished replanting all but Lot by alse house

13th Rained a little to day went to meeting & Sunday School. Johns children 3 of them came here, Henry complaining at this time & I gave him a dose of medicine last night

14th Raining this morning cleaning out Tobacco Barns etc Hung up our Bacon this morning Finished replanting Tobacco & thining corn

15. Plowing & weeding corn, cleared of[f] very pretty Sent Jerry to Andersons after money for Faris Tobacco & my Lugs, got no money at all

1859 Feby 22nd Smith & Clem Shrubing I am going to Aspen Grove

23rd Clem Planting I. potatoe, overseer & working on Logs Sent to Mill this morning claiborne & little Henry Beding for corn planted out some Peach Trees, — etc

24 I went to aspen Grove to day & to Sarah J McCullocks [? Cr ]J W Graves Esq EsqHalling Logs & Plowing for Corn, [?] JW Graves

25. Raining & Hailing this morning making a long Ladder, Harrow & spining & making a Baskets till 12 or 1 Oclock & then went to halling Logs for Barn etc

26. Raining & Hailing this morning but cleared off after a while & they went to Halling Logs for Barn, & my wife Started to the CH to see Jerry

27th I went to see Doct Johns tolerable good day.

28 Halling Logs this morning for Barn moderate weather yet Jacob here yet went to allen Scruggs yesterday & got him to take back the Horse he bought by giving him $3 done so tho it was Sunday halling wood & leaves

March 1st Mr Robey Came here to work in Black Smith Shop Mr Chumbly with him Haling out manure till 12 Oclock & then leaves in field clem little Henry & SmithCutting down corn stalks where we are going sew Oats

March 2nd Mr Roby & overseer in Shop Henry & Claiborne Halling leaves & Oats balance finished Cutting down corn stalks etc,- our coal will only last 1 day more Fine weather at this time, Kate here

3rd Mr Roby & overseer in Shop balance Thrashing Out Oats to sew. Raining all day. quite Cold, began last night,

Decr 17. 1860 Corn Oats etc gone to day after corn Mr Hubbards Milly had a cow calf last night all my Shoats up 2 Boars, gone Bot 236 lbs Pork of Allen Scruggs @ $8½ pr 100 lbs.

18th Went down to aspen Grove, to see Hester sick all day to day & left her sick, but I thought about night she was a little easier, made arrangements to Kill 11 Hogs down there, leave one, making arrangements to Kill 2 Here, & may be some I may buy tomorrow, Halled & Cut & Malled wood to day,- cloudy & like for falling weather, to night,-

19th. Killed our 2 Piggs here to day & Bot Two out of drove for us & Killed them, Henry went to mill this morning to Whiteheads carrd 1 Turn Corn 1 Turn wheat for negroes here & carried 1 Bus. wheat for Henry & Malissa, & 1 Bushel wheat for Ben promised him for faithful work with machine in fall when hired to me he has gone down to aspen grove to Kill 11 Hogs there & get overseer have his but since night it has set in to raining & we may not Kill there in morning Jerry came here this morning & let him have some sole leather for his shoes Hester has got well I heard this morning bot of Mr Williams my 2 hogs & 8 for Mr Hunts plantation,-

20th. I went to Plantation & fixed every thing there & 21st I went to CH.- Cut & Halled wood cleaned out Hog pen & in evening halled leaves

22 Returned from CH. Halling & cutting wood Bob here to day - -

Janry 10th Sent Jerry Smith to Chalk Level. Mr Chumney gone to Plantation to make alse coffin & see about her, my wife going to Mrs Colemans to see Mattie who is sick we hear Our folks are cutting & malling wood Henry is Barking ribs this morning & then to cutting wood still cloudy & like for Rain, I am going to Mr Hunts place to sell Bed, bot by allen, & he fail[e]d to comply with turns of sale & then I want to go to aspen Grove to see about burying alse this morning she was buried Mr Chumney made coffin

11th Mrs Hargrave here last night & went homethis morning Raising cider house to day clem spining

12th. Mr Chumney looking for white sow this morning, cutting & malling & Halling wood to day cleaning of [f] Plant Beds to Burn, Halled up one Stack Oats yesterday I am going to meeting to day

13. went to meeting House to meeting

14th Hired Fannie & Johnson Fannie to Fannie W Fitzgerald for Valuals & clothes Johnson to Joseph M Moses on same terms all went from here yesterday evening This morning Hailing raining & freezing at night nearly still raining & freezing Bob & Henry making Brooms & claiborne Little Henry at work on Basket Smith picking Cotton Clem spining overseer made [ing] Blades & whitted saw - dolefull weather -

15 no better Rained all night & to day Our Dining room is nearly wet all over water standing fixed it to day shelled Corn & striped Tobacco in prize Barn, sent Jerry Smith|Smith]] to Mill,-

16th Rained nearly all night again, shelling & this morning still cloudy & like for Rain, cleared off
