1859 March 22 Fine weather about this time, nearly done Sewing Oats, & Rye Raking leaves this morning - Overseer fixing water Gaps etc etc, in the evening Henry went down to Aspen Grove with waggon. Carried tools done up in shop got 5 Bushels wheat for ourselves & 2½ for Mr Chumbly got back here in the Rain at night Mr Chumbly & little went down there after cow ^ calf & clay brot up here - etc -

23rd started Henry soon to Faris s Mill with 5 B. wheat for me 2½ for Chumbly & 4 Bus corn for meal,- Mr Cothran came up & we are raising negro House & at work On Barn some, Cothran & 3 hands Came up from aspen Grove This morning my friend & Bro. JD Hunt Died suddenly- yesterday he came from the Court House stop at my house went home, did not rest well last night arose soon this morning & walked out in the yard near the icehouse& called his Man Ben to Come to him, Ben went to him seeing his situation Caught him before he fell & he Died before they could get in the House with him DoctSteptoe was in the House at the time This was a little after sunrise this morning - Beautfiul day etc etc

24th Been over to Johns attending to Digging his Grave etc We are raking up manure this morning Halled up Stack Oats & 1 Blade Stack went to Plowing rain stoped them Chumbly fixing chicken coop shelling Corn etc.

1859 Sept 2nd making fence in Lot Shingling negro House Dr P D Steptoe Returned at Jnos place Cutting down pines in old field Halled wood to Tobacco House — this morning, clear cool day —

3rd Sept at work on our Smoke house nearly all day fixing the inside of it clear fair day. Wm Langhorn & James C Hunts 2 Daughters Fan & Bit Stayed here last night. & Servant & Stud Horse to carry allor Carriage

4th Nannie Sallie & myself went to aspen Grove to day - Jerry went with Fannie & Cate to Capt Fitzgeralds Saturday —

5th Cloudy & like for Rain Toping Worming & succoring Tobacco this morning - This is monday & ever Since last Thursday company at Johns place, Steptoe Thorn[ton?] Langhorn Jns Hunts 2 Daughters & Mrs Hargrave & her family -- clouday & Raining a little once in a while, Mr Stanly here & fixed upon next Friday week to settle his matters

6th Fannie Came here last night this morning Carried her Colts to aspen Grove to wean quite cool this morning, worming & succoring Tobacco to day - Jerry gone with Fannie to aspen Grove,- Returned & in evening I started with Sallie to Danville to School to Mr N. Penick, Boarding with Mr T. D Neal at $10 pr month — From 6th to 16th when I returned they have finished pulling fodder here cut 1 house Tobacco cut some Tops, etc. found them all well, Rain[in]g this morning being 16th they are firing Tobacco spining etc Mr Brown stayed here all night

17th cleared off last night wind high, sent Him to aspen Grove to get some corn & wheat to Eat & bring me a Lamb, cutting Topsgot ½ Bbl wheat ½ Bbl corn

1860 April 30th Planted Cotton water mellons Simblings cucumbers Egyptian wheat & Broom Corn seed & fixed Land for Irish Potatoes.- Mrs Hunt went to Court House to day & Nannie Clement with her & Rhoda

May 1st. Sent to work on Road to day Rained & they back by Twelve Oclock & we went to striping Tobacco & Will finish what we had down

2nd went to work on road again & it rained & stoped them, Halled 4 Loads wood & then making Brooms & Spining Rained. I went to Aspen Grove they were prizing Tobacco & doing but little Found Federick very sick, & left him so.

3rd Federick Died last night about 3 Oclock & Buried him this evening - finished working here to day claiborne went to aspen Grove to help Dig Grave, Halling leaves Bushing Oats, & Hilling etc etc — Mrs Hunt returned this evening from CH.

4th Halling out Trash out of new ground Rails & wood. Hilling Picking Plant Beds etc —

5. Planted Peas Irish Potatoes for Cate use & Coltering in new ground fine weather Mr Moses here on Saturday evening & Sallie

6th Left & went home, Robt Clifton of Mr Hunts Est Buried to day = Doron has been here for 2 days - Doct Steptoe attended on child that Died

7th Replanting Corn weeding Oats & coltering new ground nearly done 1 way -. Doron gone

8 Hilling & Coltering. Halling out manure

9th Halling manure Hilling in new ground

10. Raining, Halling,- Rails Planting greens Beets etc,- etc,- began to Plow Corn

11 Took down our Lugs here this morning & last evening began to Plow corn yesterday Cut our Calves & marked yearlings

29th Saturday Sept 1860 I Have been stilling nearly all this week for Bro Hunts Est. stilled into Low wines 11 Bbls Cider Finished Covering Barn for Tobacco to day & skined Cow, got up Broom Corn Sent Jerry^ ^ Smith to Chalk Level,-

30th Sent Wm A Millers acct to Mrs Coleman by Charles to day

Oct 1st Mrs Coleman came gave me $40 money to pay Saml Steptoe & Wm A Miller Firing Tobacco, on Road finished stilling Cider for Bro Hunts Est. this morning prizing Tobacco to day Turned out another Hdd & put under prize the Lug Hdd chinked Barn, etc etc. Finished worming & succoring over Tobacco Gave My Daughter Kate 4 Ewe Lambs & a stack Blade fodder to Mr Moses last spring to feed with

2nd Oct. Stilling myself, Mrs Hunt went to Doct Steptoes & come back at night prizing old Tobacco cutting to day in near new ground all day - moderate weather finishing new Barn

3 Hilling & finished to day by Dinner made 42 Gallons, toll & stilling to come out for Bro Hunts Est — Cutting Tobacco Bob at work here to day cloudy Sent all the Cotton over to old place that belongs there oil & molasses

4 Prizing & Finished prizing to day Rained nearly all day

5. Daubing new Barn & Cut over Tobacco have Cut about 2000 sticks getting up apples & Beeting Mrs Fitzgerald 2 hands come at night to help

4th went to Plantation Mrs Hunt went to Mrs Colemans yesterday & Saturday we halled wood cut etc cleared off very pretty

5. Sandy & Jacob shoemaking we are halling up stalks & commence plowing for wheat. I went to Scruggs. sold Ham Steer for $20. If paid in 3 mos. no Int. If not Int from to day began to still for Est. run off only one still full to day

6th Novr I went to Election shoemaking Cutting, Plowing for wheat in Lot - My Hogs begins to Come up, except the Pigs

7th Finished sewing wheat stilling all day for Est. run out 2 still fulls - Fixed cow shelter frame -

8. Put up Greens Halling Rails for hog pen, & cow pen, etc getting pss to shingle office Sho[e]making all this week here & at aspen Grove, Jacob & Sandy
