46 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE to the Finance Committee A report is received from the Committee to whom was referred the matter of constructing an Engine House; Thereupon the report is accepted and it is ordered that the Committee be continued and that the Committee be & they are hereby instructed to receive plans and specification for a building to be constructed having the 1st story of brick and the second story of wood And now the Council proceeds to consider the Ordinance No 263 the same 'ferring entitled "An Ordinance to restrain and regulate laundry and Wash Houses within the limits of the City of Seattle for the purpose of prevention of fires; there upon after due consideration said Ordinance is adopted upon the following vote to wit: In favor of adoption Clancy, Collins, Densmor, Jennings, Keenan, Keezer & McDonald, against adoption none. Ordered That The matter of improper taxation of certain real estate belonging to the University be & is hereby referred to the City Attorney A communication is received from the Mayor upon the matter of the deficiency existing by reason of the 8th Street Sidewalk; Thereupon it is ordered that the Clerk be & is hereby instructed to issue such a warrant on the City Fund as will Cover all existing deficiencies for and in accord of said Sidewalk. Ordered that the Ordinance levying a special tax to pay for the sidewalk constructed under Ordinance No. 257 be sent to the Finance Committee for the purpose of ascertaining the amount to be levied. And now come the several persons herein after named & make applications for licenses; thereupon said aplicants having filed their bonds it is ordered that licenses be granted them as follows: to wit: James W. Smyth a retail liquor license for 3 months from April 3rd L Diller retail liquor license & Billiard table for 3 months from April 16th Shaw & Algar retail liquor & Billiard table for 3 months

From Fire and Water recommending that the Ordinance heretofore submitted granting certain rights to John Leary to lay waterpipes be adopted. Report adopted From Fire and Water recommending the pruchase of 500 feet of Maltese Hose and also of an additional Hose Carriage Adopted. From Licenses & Revenue recommending the rejection of the application of Thomas Moore for a Retail Liquor License Adopted & License refused. From License & Revenue recommending the granting of a Grocery, Pigeon Table & Pool Table licenses to Jacob Bersch upon his application. Adopted & licenses ordered issued. From Special Committee on rules of Council asking further time. Granted 1 week's further time in which to report. Application for Licenses From Otto Pasqua for Retail Liquors. 299 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE July 16/83 such necessary repairs and extension to the Inclines at foots of Columbia and Washington Streets as they may be advised. Ordered that the Plans and Specifications for the Engine House on Columbia Street be changed so as to shorten said building 5 feet with a reduction of $200.00 on the contract price provided however, that the contractors and their bondsmen assent in writing thereto. Ordered that the Committee on the Columbia Street Engine House be and they are hereby instructed to take all necessary means to house the Engines, dispose of old Engine House and to place the Fire Bell in a position so as to be used. Licenses Granted The following applications for Licenses having been duly approved by the Committee on Licenses and Revenue licenses are ordered issues as follows, towit: Frank & Dickman retail for 3 months from July 4, 1883 Louis Sylvania 1 pigeon hole table for 6 months from July 13, 1883 Chas Kitts retail for 3 months from July 14, 1883 Otto Pasquan retail for 3 months from July 17, 1883 L. A report is rec'd from the Street Committee recommending the erection of a gas lamp corner 4th & Cherry Sts. Adopted. Claims Paid Fire Fund Gordan Hardware Co. Fire Bell for Columbia St Engine house $230.02 Consideration of Ordinances The council proceeds to consider an ordinanace entitled "A special Ordinance appropriating money to pay Audited bills," thereupon after due consideration the same is adopted upon the following vote, towit :In favor of adoption Clancy, Day, McDonald, Rasin, Ranke and Wusthoff. Against adoption none. The Judiciary Comtee submit an ordinance entitled "For vacating the alley through certain blocks"; thereupon after due consideration the same is adopted upon the following votes towit :In favor of adoption Clancy, Day, McDonald, Rasin, Ranke andWusthoff. Against adoption none. The Judiciary Committee submit an Ordinance entitled "To amend ordinance No. 499;" thereupon after due consideration the same is adopted upon the following vote, towit : In favor of adoption Clancy, Day, McDonald, Rasin, Ranke and Wusthoff.
