To the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Seattle:Your petitioners, who are owners of property on or near the line of the proposed street railway for which Mr. S L Bowman applied on the 27th inst. to your honorable body for a franchise, repectfully petition your honorable body to grant said franchise, believing that the construction of said proposed line will assist in the development of the portion of said city and of the adjacent country through which it is intended to run, and will be of great benefit to the whole city. 485 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Jun 1 1888 -ing said street. Adopted provided the grade district is extended from Mill Street to Law St instead of to Jackson Street From Same Committee rejecting petition of A A Bell and others for grading Eighth Street from Depot Street to Mill Street as the same has not been signed by a majority of the property owners in said Street Adopted. From Same Committee rejecting petition of J C Brittain and others for opening West St toUniversity Street and the widening of the Alley through to Mill Street. Adopted From Same Committee on petition of F Hochbrunn and others for changing cetain grades and asking that a Committee be appointed to investigate the grade of Depot, Fifth and other streets, as follows: "We recommend that a committee be appointed to examine said grades with power to act" On motion the whole matter is referred to the Street Committee in conjunction with the City Attorney. From Same Committee on remonstrance of Geo Brandt and others against opening Alley through Block 106 of D T Denny's 1st Addn recommending that the parties now obstructing the alley be given until November next to vacate the same. Adopted. From Same Committee asking further time to report on the ordinance asked for by theWest Street Lake Union andPark Transit Company. Granted. From Same Committee granting petition of H H Lewis & others for grading and building sidewalks onWest Street from Virginia Street to University Street, Adopted and the city Surveyor ordered to submit plans and specifications therefor.

506 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE June 15 1888 Ordered that the matter of equalizing the assessment Roll for Third Street from Depot Street to Virginia Street postponed until Friday June 29th. Ordered that the Judiciary Committee in conjunction with the City Attorney submit an Ordinance regulating Hacks and rates of fare to be charged. Pursuant to law and published notice the Council now proceeds to the appointment of appraisers for South Eleventh Street, and it appearing that the property owners along the line of said South Eleventh Street have not made or filed any appointment of such appraisers either on behalf of the owners of property benefited or owners of property condemned. On motion H H Lewis is appointed by the Council to act as such appraiser on behalf of the owners of property benefited and Leander Miller is appointed to act as such appraiser on behalf of the owners of property condemned. Whereupon the Mayor appoints Fred E Sander to act as such appraiser on behalf of the City. Ordered that Smith's Supplemental Plat of Block 12 Burkes Second Addition to the city of Seattle be and the same is hereby approved. Ordinances An Ordinance is submitted by the City Clerk entitled "A Special Ordinance appropriating money to pay audited Bills" which is passed by the following vote. Ayes Frink, Green, Lake, Niesz, Russell & Reitze. Nays none. Ordered that the Council adjourn until Tuesday June 19 1888 Attest W R Forrest clerk

662 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Nov 23 1888 Headquarters at foot of Commercial street read and on motion tabled. Claim of Geo A Kellogg for fees as referee in case of City of Seattle vs Jos McNaught read and referred to the Finance Commitee Resignation of O.D. Butterfield as police officer read and accepted and On motion it is ordered that O.D. Butterfield be and his hereby appointed a special police officer at a salary of $90.00 for month to act as License Collector under the orders of the of the City Clerk and License & Revenue Commitee. Petition of C H Hanford for appointment of Jos F. McNaught an appraiser for Condemmation of property along the line of South Eleventh Street in place of H H Lewis who is absent from the City, read and referred to the Judiciary Commitee. Petition of Geo Kinnear and others for change of Fire limits read and referred to Committee on Fire and Water Petition of M Keeton for permission to occupy alley in Block 14 of Maynard's Plat read & on motion refected. Petition of Fred Kelly & others for crossing on Depot Street at Box Street read & referred to Street Commitee. Petition of H Jones and others in the matter of the Fifth Street grade, read and referred to the Street Commitee.
