through the four years at Annapolis. He seemed like a very nice fellow, and he said that he and Hatch were at the Union Iron Wks in S.F. on the submarine ships. I am quite anxious to hear from Cavite, as the last letter which Helen got said that Nor had or had had dengue fever.

I have a new rug on the office floor (my room) and it looks a great deal better, and feels more comfortable. Swell! Jos resigned at the ranch and came home to see Les. The bookeeper at the ranch undertook to reduce his pay. He has since gone back at $100.00 a month and board. I think he is interested in the work. He has heard nothing from the draft board since he filed his questionnaire. Lesley says he is doing nothing, and is going to move into the Y.M.C.A. in Riverside, as it is nicer than out at camp, and wont cost any more. He says it looks as if they were all going to stay at March Field and not go to Texas. On Wednesday a.m. last, the bull dog of Miss Westgate followed Percy Fox down to the Wards, and there saw Waterman's Caruso whom he promptly attacked and nearly killed. It was in the morning, and all the men were in the City, but the women all got very much excited. Mrs Kales (Tyson) shook pepper in the bull's eyes, and that made him quit. Caruso is in the hospital now. Mrs Waterman told Miss W. that she would shoot her dog, if he ever attacked a dog of hers again. Miss W. says she will not as it is against the law. Capt Ward says law or no law he will shoot the bull dog if he puts his foot on his lawn!! Well Sned, have a good time and write when you can. We all send heaps of love & hugs to you.

Always your loving father HLA Bates

[Written along the left side of the paper:] Am having the car all overhauled. Moore & Campbell have put in a new cam shaft, new piston rings, have fixed the timing gear and bearings and tightened the piston rods. The Magneto is being taken apart by an electrician and cleaned, and next Wed I hope to have the car back.

I love to play, but now that Mabel is in school I can't find anyone. Martha and I used to play a lot before the wedding but now she is too busy.

We are going to Oakland this aft. [afternoon] Mother wants to get some things to take up to Seattle.

I got a letter from Miss Westgate yesterday saying she would be home the end of the week, much to my delight. I am to begin my lessons again next Tuesday at my regular hour 9:30. I practised an hour this morning.

I hope that you are coming home to-morrow, dear.

a moving picture and a very good one too.

Martha, Joc and your father have gone over to Oakland for dinner. They did not know where they were going when they left. Jane is going to play in a recital to-night, mother is going and wants me to too; although I dread going I suppose I will love to. Met Miss Westgate to-day and she was teasing me to take lessons again. I told her she may see me again soon.
